Fuel pump replacement

Has anyone replaced a fuel pump? I crawled under my 97 Mark VIII and it looked different than the Mustangs I'm used to working on. I'm assuming the pump is in the gas tank???When I turn on the key I don't hear the fuel pump at all.

A lot of us have.

The pump is in the tank.

I'm not sure when the stock pump makes noise, or if it does at all.

You should be able to hear something when the ignition is first turned on and the car is not running. You could also just put a fuel pressure gauge on the fail and key the ignition on to make sure it is turning on. 4 or so bolts and the tank is removed then there is a ring retaining the pump along with a couple fuel and vent lines. Overall it is isn't a hard job just make sure you run the tank down low so it isn't very heavy!

this wont answer your question but still funny on the same subject. i was in autozone today they have the mats on the desk that shows you all the rental tools they have. one kit is a fuel pump replacement took kit one thing i noticed in the kit was a big ass hammer i just thought that was kinda funny.

now for your question another way to check it is to beat on the bottom of the tank with your hand. beat as hard as you can with just your hand a hammer might put a hole in the tank then go try to start your car. when you do that it will sometimes jar the pump just enough to get one last run out of it. i did that whit a buddy's car he was stuck in a parking lot and i beat the tank and he drove it home so we could replace the pump

I'll try giving the tank a whack to see if it shakes 'er loose. It's not in the best p[lace in the world to work on it and would be nice to get 'er in the garage. When I turn on the key I don't hear the pump whirl. Bad news is I just filled 'er up. I have a floor jack I can use though.

Does the tank come out from the bottom? I took a quick look this morning but didn't see anything I recognized as a fuel tank (at least what I'm used to seeing as a fuel tank). Don't suppose anyone has a picture they could share? I replaced the fuel pump on my son's 95 Mustang and the tank was readily visible.

the fuel tank is right in front of the "axle" and it does all the way accross the car. most of it is on the pass side with a small part on the driver side. it gets thin in the middle for the drive shaft to go through (over). if your using a floor jack a piece of ply wood will really help you get it down level. when i did my pump i did it at school and used a tranny tack and a pallet. all you would need is a piece of plywood about 10" wide and as wide as the car is. its not to hard to change the hardest part is getting the filler hose on and off but a little greese will help alot!
