Fuel pump took a dump!

CAUTION! This will be a long story! First off my thanks to Joe(ponyfreak) for some valuable info and being available even while at work, to help me!
This story takes place on the way back from a horrible trip to the big apple and Long Island,New York. The reason i was in NY was to pick up a mustang(which took a dump on the NJ turnpike right after the gothels bridge and the car is still there). After 3 hours of sleep at the south bound exit 8a Molly Pitcher service area on the NJ Turnpike,I start the long trip home,to Somerset,KY. After 3 hours of driving I'm just across the Maryland line on I-81 south. I start to pass a slow truck going up a slight incline and notice that the car isnt acclerating! I pull back to the slow lane and take exit 5(maybe 7). I notice that the car is not responding to the fuel pedal, popping in the intake and missing. At that point I was thinking the fuel pump was bad. Limping the car through town, I made it to an advance auto parts store.
They didnt have a fuel pressure guage, so i used a tire guage(surprisingly accurate) and had less then 8lbs. after a few more presses on the schrader valve there was no fuel pressure at all. So I start my search for a fuel pump. Advance dosent have one, but with "payment now they can have it in 2 days"! No thanks! I needed to get one now! After reluctently giving me the yellow pages,I took down some #'s and found a pump! $142.55 for a walbro stock replacement, not bad considering the Lincoln dealer wanted 501.55! So after a nice guy named Terry and his wife Dee took me to get the pump i was set to install it.
I thought I might have to work on the mustang so my tools, floor jack and stands were all in the trunk. After a call or 2 to Joe to get some advice i get started(man all this typing and im just now starting to work on the car!).
It turned out to be a pretty straight forward job! First i got the car on jack stands and took the exhaust loose(just the 3 rear hangers and the brace like bar in the middle). That allowed me enough room the lower the tank just enough to get to the pump on the passenger side. The fill and vent hoses looked hard to get to until I removed the passenger side rear tire, then with a long screw driver they were a snap. I did get a nasty cut at this point trying to remove the filler tube! The lock ring holding the pump in was the easiest one i've ever experienced! Just a screwdriver and a tap with a hammer and it was loose. I removed the assembly and put the new pump in, cut a new delivery hose and replaced the pickup screen. It went back together fairly easily. The replacement time was about 2 hours and 20 minutes start to finish. It would be much easier on a lift!
I also want to say anyone having these symptoms watch out(surging going up inclines at 5 mph or less, hesitation, miss at idle, low fuel mileage)! After i installed the new pump these conditions are gone, they had been present for about 6 months or so on my car. I got 475 miles out of 17.2 gallons of fuel on the way back and that was going through the mountains of western Maryland and West Virginia!
Sorry for the long post! Anybody want to buy a 93' Mustang in central Jersey?

RE: Fuel pump took a dump!

Glad to hear you got that thing togeather and running. Better news is that it could not have happened on a better road trip! Good thing you had all those tools!
