Fun With Carbon Fiber

Well I got some carbon fiber mat. 10.9oz, pretty heavy stuff. I am going ot make an intake tube for Eli's Mark VIII, so I wanted to get some practice in before making his tube. here are some pics of what i made. It is the cover piece for the front of the red whore.

As you can see from the pics the mat I had was too thick for this complex of a shape. The Glue that I used was not strong enough to hold the thick fiber to my mold.

THe first pic is the whole layered mat with resin applied to it. This picture looks really bad. I do not know why it came out looking so bad. Just a little deviance caught the flash of the camera and made it look like a crumpled up POS. It does not look like that in person.

This picture is of the same piece jsut a close up of a section. You can see some airbubbles and stray carbon hairs.

Same piece just he middle of it,

this is a pic of a piece of mat in my hand with no resin applied.

I think that this mat is perfect for an intake tube when coupled with high temp epoxy. It is thick enough that one layer would hoil as much boost as you can throw at it.

Tomorrow when it dries I will get some of the extra pieces i have and hit them with a hammer to see how strong this stuff really is.

RE: Fun With Carbon Fiber

Hey Joe, when working with carbon fiber, how do you get it to conform to concave shapes (or any non-flat shapes) without it bunching up? I am currently in the middle of a similar project.

RE: Fun With Carbon Fiber

well looks like my epoxy is old. It did not harden like it should have. I have to order new epoxy.

Crash, what are you working on? This is how I use it. I use whatever I want to make the fiber out of as the mold. I them spray it down with glue then cover it up with seran wrap. YOu can also use wax, but I trust the seran a lot more than wax. once I have the item covered with the seran I then spray the seran with a glue too. I use welwood. I then lay the mat I cut on the item, and give slack to the parts that have the most curve. THe glue will hold it tight. If you get a bunch in it lift it up and then re work it a little, the bunch will come out. Jsut takes patience.

RE: Fun With Carbon Fiber

One day Trish's boot heel melted into a blob on my $2000 carbon exhaust on my bike. Luckily, when it cooled down i just popped it off...otherwise...well I don't know what I would have done...
