Gas Smell-age

Yup its pretty strong too. I ONLY smell it when I am highway driving. Its like clock work, 15-20 mins into the drive, and the smell is strong. Windows up and it finally creeps in at about 45-60 mins. It is not coming from the exhaust from what I can tell. I swapped the intake and changed the fuel filter about 2 months ago. And from what I can tell the smell is not coming from the engine area, and not from the wheel well either. Ive read about some canister being a problem, but I have no clue where it is. It seems it could be that, maybe the 15 mins is how long it takes to fill... i don't know. Anyone have any ideas? Once again its ONLY when highway driving.

The canister is in the driver's fender well. You could also have a hose off of the top of the gas tank, or if its a Gen 2, on the set-up under the trunk. If it smells like RAW gas, its gotta be something to do with the EVAP system on the gas tank or the vapor lines from the tank to the canister. Either way, need to know the year of the car.

Also, do you like to top off your fuel when you re-fill?

97 lsc, I never really go over a half tank. I recently swapped out the intake to a cobra set up. could that be causing extreme richness? the intake is slightly ported, and the runners are ported. Its still running on the stock tune till funds get a little better, so im thinking that might be a possibility. Could it run so rich that it smells this bad?

Pull a plug or two and check for soot. Check the O2 sensors for soot. Any soot on your exhaust tips or bumper?

There is a difference between the smell of GAS and the smell of a rich running car.

I had this same problem until I took off the front passenger inner fender well, took down the EVAP canister and Purge valve, and then took the purge valve apart and took out the Diaphragm until I can get an new purge valve.
I had the same horrible fuel vapor smell and I have not smelled it the tiniest bit since I took out the diaphragm.

Hope this helps.
