i going to put a set of 3.73 gears in my 93. i have a 2nd pumpkin that i am puting them in and im stuck....i dont know how to adjust backlash in the 8.8 if someone could let me know that would be great. also my car has an open diff. and it spins both tires does anyone know why?
Thanks,
Zack

RE: gears

Someone else will be able to answer your first question better...

The second one, well, all I can tell you is that sometimes i would get both tires spinning as well, but not always. I know that under hard acceleration I would leave a pair of black marks.

RE: gears

I'll try and get the procedure from my manual later.

Basically, first you get the pinion depth setting in spec using shims behind the pinion gear. It is imperative this setting is correct before attempting the backlash adjustment.

In layman's terms, the backlash is adjusted by shifting shims from one side of the differential to the opposite side, in effect moving the ring gear laterally to adjust the mesh of the ring gear to the pinion gear. Of course this is done after the differential bearing preload is set with shims on both sides of the differential. There is a specified range and a preffered setting.

RE: gears

You really want to procure a traction Loc for your differential. It will lock both axles up simultaniously. Some folks call it posi-traction, but there are several renditions of this from various vendors. The FOMOCO unit is readily available and is rebuildable , and less you are going to make a ton of horsepower and live at the drag strip should be sufficiant for most users.

I have worked on one Ford differential. It was a 74 Ford. The backlash on this model was adjusted by turning the adjusters on either side of the diff. You may need a special tool to turn these adjusters. To adjust you need to turn both sides and you need to make sure you get the preload correct by tightening the adjustments x amount from being snug. To accurately measure the backlash you will need a dial indicator.

The other diff I replaced gears in was a 12 bolt Chevy. That model uses shims on both sides of the carrier and you need to add or remove shims on both sides to adjust backlash. To adjust preload, you get the backlash correct and with the shims snug and then add x amount of shims to both sides

I recommend you buy the Richmond gear video from Summit and view it. It costs about $20.

By having an independent rear with it bolted to the car, the Mark is not as susceptible to spinning only the right side tire.

The main reason most rear drive cars spin only the right rear is the drive shaft rotates counterclockwise looking at the car from the rear. The twisting of the driveshaft tends to remove weight from (or pick up) the right rear and plant the left rear.

The short version...

To measure backlash mount dial indicator on stand and position indicator needle centrally on a drive tooth. Zero indicator and turn ring gear without turning pinion gear to measure backlash. Backlash specification: 0.203-0.330mm (0.008-0.013 inch). Preferred backlash is 0.254mm (0.010 inch).

If backlash is not to specification, correct backlash by increasing thickness of one shim and decreasing thickness on the other shim by the same amount.

when i had my stock rear i never could get two tire marks. it would always spin the right side. all the power would be send to the right everytime. just my experience open diffys suck
