Gen1 vs Gen 2 rearview mirros

Ok so after looking around alot I can see that the mirrors are different between gen1 and gen2. Now can they be swapped around? Can gen2 mirrors be put onto my gen1 mark? Why did they change these around?
 
They are quite different... but it can be done. I have seen them in person on a gen 1... there was a bit of work involved... There is a member named eclectic aka Bruce he was on the dark side and has completed the swap.

The gen 2 mirrors have a built in puddle lamp, and LED turn signal indicators.
