Since we are on the Iraq topic, just thought I'd share. It's been many months since the Iraq invasion, and now some books are just starting to hit the market. I'm currently on another book on Iraq (I read many books), which I think is the best so far. It's called "Generation Kill" a true story, and it follows the First Recon Marines through Iraq. It's a great book for several reasons. These First Recon guys are HARDCORE. Only 1% (according to book) make it into this elite fighting force. No electronic games, cell phones, or any crap like that are allowed in these guys' barracks. Book and cards only, so as not to distract. To amuse themselves, these guys hide in the shadows, and "ambush" their fellow Marines, knives in hand. Many of them have bruises on their faces from fighting each other to stay in shape. They "stab" each other in the ribs with their knives, flecking out tiny pieces of flesh. It's insane! The platoon is a broad spectrum, and it's pretty neat to see how all the weird and different personalities work together and interact. Many times, I thought the whole platoon was gay, since there was so much homo-erotic talk. But these are men who are bonded as tight as can be, and they do love each other. The book is exciting, but also disturbing. The troops are under equipped, which seemed hard to believe given all the $$ the US spends on the troops. The troops are also utilized badly, out of their area of expertise. The commanders of all levels appear to be bumbling morons, and the communication is atrocious between units. While the men are organized and trained well, the assualt is horribly disoganized, and intel is sorely lacking. It's interesting to see how the opinions of these hardcore killers change after they actually have to kill, and also disturbing to see how a member of the team starts to get a taste for killing and rather enjoys it. Captains and platoon leaders lose their marbles, and go nuts. It's quite the story, and I can see this being made into a movie as grand as "Saving Private Ryan". It's exciting, sad, harrowing, frustrating..all the qualities of a great book. Check it out if you can...just thought I'd share..
