Got rid of the Mark

The massive depreciation, the lack of useful trunk space, and what seems like the entire front-end needing replacement (inner/outer tie rods, rotors, brakes) caused me to go car shopping.

I am now the proud owner of a 2002 Honda CR-V LX. All-wheel-drive, 160 HP out of a 2.4L 4-cyl - not too bad, scoots pretty well, considering. Honda certified, 21000 miles, got it for 18k even, around 300 less than book.

The thing I miss the most are: 1) HIDs, 2) keyless entry.

I will be fixing #2 shortly with the Honda receiver, $95. The Gen1 CR-V's had the receiver (just like all the Marks) but Gen2's come optional. HIDs, not sure what to do about that. But regardless.

Got 5k out of the 1996 LSC, 107k miles on trade - not too disappointed in that.

Needless to say I'll be around less than before (if that's possible) but wanted to let you know a 96 LSC should be on the lot at David McDavid Honda in Irving, TX if you want it!

Good luck, all! Thank you VERY much for all your help over the years, I have left the board's address in the car for the next owner.

RE: Got rid of the Mark

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Good for you. I don't think I'll be buying domestic my next time around either. They have nothing that interests me. I wanted to keep my 97 LSC, but my engine would need some refreshing (it has 155,000 miles on it), and thus far prices have been around $5,000. That's HALF of the cars value, roughly. So it's just not practical.

But the Honda will serve you well. Congrats!

TE...the only one on drugs are domestic car makers making POS, ugly cars that make me go Y A W N!!

What major car manufacture is headquartered in Canada?

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Canada may not have any "domestic" car companies, but the following is a partial list, from memory, of cars/trucks that are assembled in Canada:

Honda: Civic, MDX
Toyota: Corolla, Matrix, Lexus RX300
Ford: Grand Marquis, Crown Victoria, Marauder, F150 pick up, Freestar (Windstar)
GM: Silverado Pick Up, Monte Carlo, Regal, Impala, Malibu
DaimlerChrysler: Full Size Van, Pacifica, MiniVan, LHS, 3000M,Concorde

Plus: Toyota has a engine plant, GM has a transmission plant and various component plants, and Ford has two engine plants.

Check the vin numbers on your other cars, if they begin with a "2" they are Canadian built.

So wait... you got rid of your Lincoln... for a Honda...http://www.markviii.org/~badsax/smileys/smileythescream.gif

I think Lewis Black said it best... it's things like this that lead people to have aneurysms... because even when you think you're think about something else, in the back of your mind you're really thinking...
"He gave up his Lincoln for a Honda"... and then POW... a week later you're dead... http://www.markviii.org/~badsax/smileys/flower.gif

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Don't want to knock you too bad, but WTF were you thinking? Six months, max, you'll be sorry.

And Ron, what can i say. The American car companies are falling down on the job. But i can still think of a few nice new cars from American companies, like the CTS-V, the GTO, the XLR, the Crossfire, uh, well, that's all i can think of.

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Dave & Sandy,

Puh-Lease. Those cars are NOT affordable for most, and I have no interest in carrying a 2nd mortgage to get one. Here's are some prices on some of those cars over here.

CTS-V $70,000 (more than a Vette, and the interior still looks like the POS regular CTS. For 70K I want a NICE interior)

XLR $100K If I'm popping $100K on a ragtop, it AIN'T gonna be a Caddie..sorry!

Viper $100K+ Still shoddily built for that kind of money.

GTO $50K (not expected to come to Canada until 2005) Have you guys even looked at the side profile of the GTO?? Do this test. Put 2 finger over the front of the car, just forward of the front tires. Now see the profile..it's...a...STRETCHED CAVALIER!!! BARF!!!

Crossfire $50K Dave..you must be joking..the Crossfire???? With 215HP for $50K? Forgot to mention the Honda Accord is FASTER than that POS.

Saleen The only one worth buying is the S7...and well...

Corvette is the only one that remotely interests me..but as a used car.

Under $50K here...there's nothing interesting here from the domestics.(I like Cobra, but the looks are just too plain..looks like any other Stang, more or less) The imports?? Well...the new Acura TL (270HP), Audi A4, Infiniti G35 Series (260-280HP), Jaguar X Type, Mazda RX8, Subbie WRX STi (300HP) etc... Seriously..the domestics really don't have much as far a sports cars go. The Linc LS maybe....and I mean maybe...but apart from that??? Very disappointing...

RE: Got rid of the Mark

I personally will be going german next time around. Unless an 'American' car company gets its act together and build another luxury sports coupe, or at bare minimum a luxury sports car (even if it has 4 doors.....) as long as it has a big interior, a big angine and a standard tranmission. If not, my greanbacks will be directed towards a BMW 5 or 6 series, whcich of course will be four years old by the time I am ready to buy one. I have a '92 BMW 325i 5-spd with 85,000 miles on it that I bought over the summer for $6500. The suspension was kind of worn out and it needed new brakes, but after I took care of all that and put a DINAN exhaust on it, the car is absolutely amazing.

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Ron, 4-get the G35 Infiniti - go for the M45 !! Nicer looking & 400 Horsepower (or darn close to 400 .... maybe 360, I think!

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Just piling on I guess. The Honda will (WILL) take a $ 5000 dump in one year from what you paid, (18K). That's alot of front end work if you ask me.

Did you pay 18K after trade? 23-5=18?

They probably actually gave you $2500 for your car, and for that much, I would have kept it and put it in storage waiting for another life change.

Good luck with the Honduh.

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Well, everyone has their opinions. Hondas generally hold 40-60 percent of value after 5 years. Brand-spanking new, right off Honda.com, the vehicle I have with delivery is: $19,400. That means since I have a 2002, it has, RETAIL, depreciated about $1200 in two model years. I didn't get brand new because with how bad my Lincoln loan was I couldn't "roll-in" that extra on a new loan.

I expect it to be at about 14k in 3 years, which will be perfect because I'll **FINALLY** be not upside down on a car loan, which the Mark really made happen.

Just an FYI, a 1997 CRV bone stock still retails for over 10,000. That's 7 model years and over 50% residual. Just checked KBB. My 1996 Mark booked at a little over 9,000. That's over 75% depreciation only one model year older compared to a 97 CR-V. Ouch.

I think I made a good investment. I may be missing out on "goes like stink" and "looks really really cool" but I won't be flushing that cash down the toilet anymore.

And Sandy, I'm not LEAVING, I just won't be hanging around quite as much!

And whoever said a Caddy XLR is $100k - nope, it's around 70-80 according to Car and Driver.

RE: Got rid of the Mark

In reality....cars are fun and are mostly transportation to and from work, school, the liquor store, a quickie with a friend of your wife....you know....ESSENTIALS!!!

They are rarely a good investment.

Good! :)

If I win the lottery, any lottery, I am buying a new XLR immediately, I mean I am giving new meaning to the word: IMMEDIATELY. :)

RE: Got rid of the Mark

The XLR is $100K where I live...in Canada.

Sandy..the M45 is cool...but it's $62,500 here. Trying to keep things under $50K. If I had your money though, I might buy one. The G35 is faster and handles better too.....

I really love the G35 coupes, Very powerful looking, mean exhuast.. etc..

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Ron, there is absolutely no possible way the G35 sedan is faster than the M45 sedan!

G35 is a V-6 with 260 horsepower & 260 Torque and is 3,400 pounds.
M45 is a V-8 with 340 horsepower & 333 Torque and is 3,800 pounds.

Do the math, h.p. per pound! The "M" will win every time
(Unless you put 5 people in it and 1 Polo Jockey driving the "G")

RE: Got rid of the Mark

Yeah..the G35 is a very hot car, and I really like it. Recently, they're finding out something about these engines...that they LOVE boost and are solid ebnough to hold up. With a blower and only 6 pounds, they are making 350+HP. Not to shabby. And they are priced right...

RE: Got rid of the Mark

I like the M45. Infiniti's ads marketed the car as a muscle car. It has the same engine as the q45 but is lighter. It can go to 60 in less than 7 seconds. Then there's the Volvo s60R. It can go to 60 in 5.5 seconds thanks to a turbo and two intercoolers. Right now, american car companies are starting to get on track. GM has some ideas such as adding V8s to their larger cars (lesabre, bonneville). Ford has some interesting designs for future cars i.e. five hundred etc. Right now though, there's not a lot out there that excites me other than the above stated. I'm more into the older cars and my Continental should provide with years of enjoyment. Hopefully when I start looking for my next car, there will be more exciting things to look at.
