Guys, Need help Quick

(I think it’s the break sending switch, but tell me if it’s otherwise)

Alright, this just happened out of nowhere.

My tranny wont shift out of P unless I put it in the ACC position. And when it’s in that position, it doesn’t even require for me to press the break pedal. Also, when I shift into D, the emergency parking does not disengage automatically like it used too.

Is it just a break sending switch? or is it something else?

If it is, how much does it cost? And how do I change it?

Thanks!

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Yes. You should also have no tail lights, or brake lights. Smart man you are by realizing you can turn the key to acc, then select N, and start the car.

Brake light sending unit. Not sure if its a Dealer item only. Good luck Moe. Sorry it took so long to answer.. I just now saw it.

i think they run about $60(for our towncars at least), and about 1/2 hour job. Under dash, above brake pedal(I think...thats where it is on our towncars). You have to get after it soon...you have NO brake lights.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Thanx Craig, I just picked it up for $18 from the dealership, it was listed for $30+.

Strange though, because when I was driving, the message center did not alert me of any light malfunctions like it usually does if a break light goes out.

I just hope its not too involved to install. I saw it over the break pedal, but I just hope I don’t have to take down the steering column or anything.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Moe, do a quick search of the board... it is most likely the BOO switch.

With the BOO switch malfunctioning, the message center and lamp out warning module do not even know you have applied the brakes!

THANK YOU JP!!

All today I been wondering when I would have the chance to come on to ask you for that diagram, and that’s exactly what I was looking for, your a life saver man.

Thanks again, I just hope the problem stops there. I already have the switch, and half way through the operation.

Remind me to pay your dues next year ;)

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Okay, I replaced the switch, but no break lights or shifting out of park... Any more suggestions?

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

the same happened to me,i replaced the switch but the wiring harness was bad, go back to the dealer and ask for the harness, you can either sodder or splice and use butt connecters, the part is like 6 bucks, a common prob with the cars, that should work!

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Moe, you want a refund?:p

In all seriousness, I'm away from my manual(s) right now since I'm out of town, so I can't give any further info. Jeff has a good point... check the harness and plug.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

:)

Im going to the dealership 2marrow morning to get the harness, i been out in the key's the past few days.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

good luck! I had the switch quit on me, but when i replaced it all was well.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Thanks Dave, How did you replace it? Do you just cut and splice it in there? Because the other end of the wire goes in to the dash with other wires.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Moe, From my 1998 Workshop Manual:

Digital Transmission Range Sensor (PN 7A247)

The digital transmission range (TR) sensor is located on the outside of the transmission at the manual lever. The digital sensor completes the start circuit in PARK and NEUTRAL, the back-up lamp circuit in REVERSE. The digital sensor also opens/closes a set of four switches that are monitored by the powertrain control module (PCM) to determine the position of the manual lever (P, R, N, D, 2, 1).

Hope this helps. I will look to see if I can find anything else that might be the problem.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

I had a guy in my shop up here who had an Eplorer. He had the same issue. He said that he had no brake lights and a few other strange happenings with the tranny. It was a fifteen dollar switch that looks similar to the one posted up there. A quick, cheap fix for such a hasslesome issue.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

Thanks guys, but I changed the switch, the harness, and took out the center console and made sure all the connectors are just fine, still no parking lights, or break lights. The only lights that are working are the HID's at the moment.

RE: Guys, Need help Quick

if you use cruise control, does it go off the second you tap the brakes? Are you able to shift out of park? If the answer to both of those is yes, then the switch on the brake pedal is fine. I wonder if a fuse that powers the lights back there went out, or if a wire shorted.

Thats wierd, that you're not getting parking OR brake lights.
