Have to let off gas to let car shift...

My 93 with 175k just recently started to do this. As I am starting off the line, it revs up and doesn't want to engage the next gear. It will keep revving, and I have to let off the gas to get it to shift. I replaced the 1-2 accumulator last summer, along with Mercon V. I am wondering if this is possibly a problem with the 2-3 accumulator? Or torque converter wearing out (it has always had a shudder, went away for about 1000 miles after fluid replacement) It drives along in overdrive just fine once I get up to speed. Also, if I manually shift from 2-3 it is like throwing it into neutral unless I let off the gas and give it some time to shift. I am thinking I might drain and replace the fluid first, but I wanted to post and see what you guys thought, b/c it would be easier to replace the 2-3 accum. if it needs it while I am down there.

I guess I should clarify slightly the symptom. It gets off the line just fine, but instead of shifting around 2000 or so, it just keeps revving right past there, and won't shift unless you let up on the gas for a short time.

Sounds like its time for a rebuild. My buddie's camaro did the same thing for about a month, then one day all it has was 1st gear. :) Good luck!

Obviously left unattended, the end result will be a new or rebuilt transmission. It kind of sounds like an MLPS symptom, so maybe I would try replacing that first. Second choice would be a true flush and refill with Mercon V. After that I'm afraid you're looking at mechanical problems with the tranny. Maybe a shift solenoid, valve problem, clutch, sprag, ... ???

BTW... the valve body needs to be pulled to replace the 2-3 accumulator. But it does not sound related to an accumulator problem.

From reading here, I am thinking of lining up a low-miles '98 trans and getting it installed. Thanks for the replies.

It has had the MPLS replaced a long time ago by the previous owner under warranty.

I am having the EXACT same problem with my '95. When I pulled the pan, this is what I found:

I don't have any idea what these things are but it doesn't look good.
The one on the right is broken, the other looks intact. I don't have any strange noises or any other problems with the tranny other than the 1 to 2 shift and like you if I try to shift manually, it shifts into 2nd then right into neutral. I replaced my MLPS like 15k ago with a ford part. Not saying the MLPS isn't the problem but with these little clip things in the pan, I doubt it.

Anyone here have any idea what these things are?
