I just picked up a 94 mark 8 with 140XXX, the guy rearened some one and then the car had coolent problems, he replaced the fan, water pump, an stat.Shorty after the accident the car started running like junk, so im guessing he blew a head gasket or cracked a head? im new to these cars so im gonna need some advice on what to do. First I pulled the plugs out of the drivers side head and there was oil on all the plugs and wires. the two middle plugs didnt look right and all 4 of the plugs were super tight so im woundering if the head is cracked or worped. Im going to do a leak down test and compression test next. How hard and how much $$$ would it be to do a head swap? If you guys could help me out that would be great. Thanks Matt

RE: Head problems

I've been reading too many boating forums. I thought you were having trouble with the shitter.

Check the ignition first. You said oil on the plugs and wires... what part of the plug? If it's on the top part, with the wire, then it's not a problem with the heads.

I doubt your heads/motor are fubared. It's probably an ignition problem, a vacuum leak, an electrical problem, a bad MAF, a break in the intake tube after the MAF, or something to that effect. If the car hit another car hard enough to crack a head, you wouldn't be driving it.

Also: Check the radiator, check the oil, check the coolant.

RE: Head problems

the oil is on the top part. I looked at it today with the snapon scanner reading "538" cyl bal test fail. also lean exh (bank 2). The overflow has bubbles in it even when you first start up, and when i let it run for a couple min the cat on the drivers side gets real hot and glows red, im guessing thats the lean bank 2? Thanks for the help i still think the drivers side head is the problem. I hope im wrong.

Call around and find someplace that can test the coolant for hydrocarbons. That will confirm it right then and there. It could be air trapped in the cooling system, but eventually the bubbles would go away if hat were the case.

RE: Head problems

Ok ya iv seen that before its a blue liquid that turns green if theres carbon in the system. One thing that i found is on cly 7 the plug was clean! So thats prob why my cat is glowing red is because just raw fuel was being sent down the exaust, so the guy that had it before me must have changed the plugs to try and fix the problem. that one wasnt firing so i pulled the plug and hooked it to the wire and cranked the motor to see if it had spark and the wire was cut where it pluged in to the spark plug and the spark was coming out of there instead of firing the plug. so i was quessing that could be my problem so i wraped it with e tape and it still was missing so i went and bought new plugs and wires i just have to install them, if that doesnt work i will do the carbon test to be sure. ill post to tell you guys what happens. Thanks alot, Matt
