Help me fix my Suburban

sleeper

Former LOD President
I have a '91 Suburban with a couple of issues. '91, 4x4, 350 TBI, 700R4, 10 bolts front and rear.

One, it's making some weird clunking noise, and maybe a little grinding, when i drive it. It'll clunk once at a time, then do it again shortly thereafter. Usually when i'm on the gas. I can't figure out what it is. I checked out the drum brakes yesterday (just replaced the shoes and springs shortly before this started), and i checked the fluid in the diff (less than 4k on it, looked okay but not like new). Tranny seems to shift into all gears fine. Truck has new u-joints. I'm going to check the transfer case fluid next.

Two, the more persistent problem, is the brakes. When i hit the brakes, the truck pulls to the right. For all i know, this could be a suspension or steering problem, and it could be the same problem as above. The truck has new front rotors, calipers, pads, and lines. Wheel bearings were checked out and greased when i did the rotors. Truck also has new brake shoes and springs. I have gravity bled both the front and rear brakes. A visual inspection hasn't turned up any suspension or steering problems.

Can anyone help me?

RE: Help me fix my Suburban

Problem #1 could be worn out ball joints or steering links. Could also be the stabilizer bar, if it has one. It's old enough to justify checking out all the rubber on the steering/suspension.

Problem #2 sounds like you have a brake shoe dragging. Applying the brakes and have it drift right is a sure sign that the right side shoe is braking too hard. Back off the shoe adjuster on that side to check. If you have pads on the front, it could be a jammed pad, but that's rare.

RE: Help me fix my Suburban

When i replaced my rear shoes, i screwed up on the right side and didn't get the caliper engaged onto the shoe properly. Under heavy braking the left side got hot, but not the right side, indicating no braking on that side at all. It still pulled to the right. I fixed that problem last night, and left both adjusters backed off a bit so that they would self adjust, no difference.

I did a visual inspection on all the suspension components and all looked good. Regardless, i'm going to check everything out again tonight to see, if i can find a place to do it out of the rain (can't displace the lincoln from the garage :) ).

I did find something that probably caused the clunking. There are no bolts holding the transmission/transfer case to the mount at all. The only thing holding the whole engine/tranny/transfer case assembly in is the two motor mounts, and it's just resting on the tranny mount in the rear. Gonna have to fix that. Anyone know what size bolts it takes?
