Help!! My 98 is sick

Hello again everyone,

My 98 Mark VIII is sick and I need some help.

A week ago, I was driving on the freeway and my car became sluggish. When I would step on the gas, nothing would happen(no acceleration), and I would get a bit of clunking in the back of the car. When I shut the car down, everything was OK for a short period of time, and then the symptom came back.

A week later, the car drives OK when I drive like an old man, but if I try to get on it a little bit, The RPMs will shoot up to 2 and then nothing will happen(no acceleration). I have not stalled once in the car, but there is just no power when I floor it.

I wont break down, but it takes quite a bit of time to get up to 70 for the freeway.

Please let me know what you guys think the problem is(I spoke with a friend who thought that it was either the fuel pump or the cats(yikes).

I am going to Europe next week, so I am not swimming in money:(

Is there any affordable cats to put on this car? 1500 and 1200 is TOO MUCH!!!!

Thanks again everyone,
Fred

RE: Help!! My 98 is sick

How may miles are on your mark, and when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

RE: Help!! My 98 is sick

Does it seem to be getting enough gas. Could be clogged injectors.

RE: Help!! My 98 is sick

I took it out tonight to get on it, and it never exhibited any of the symptoms that I mentioned earlier.

Is this good news?

The mechanic changed the plugs and wires less than a year ago.

Get your money back, you don't have plug wires, and plugs are not needed for a 100k miles. Change your fuel filter to at least eliminate that as part of the problem.

RE: Help!! My 98 is sick

then he changed the coils packs. He is an honest guy, so he isn't ripping me off. Would a bad fuel filter make my car do this(I will change it out(how hard is this to do(can I do this myself?))).

RE: Help!! My 98 is sick

You don't have coil packs, each plug has its own coil, so you have 8 of them. You don't change them out until they go bad, especially at 40k they should be good.

Here is a write up on the home page on how to change the fuel filter.
I dirty filter will starve the engine of fuel.

Now after rereading your post, I am wondering if you have a problem with the trans slipping. Have you felt any erratic shifting, or just the lack of power?

Do you remember if the air filter was every changed as well?

I think it is just a lack of power...

I believe that he did the air filter too. I will try the fuel filter and report back.

RE: Help!! My 98 is sick

My car did the same problem no too long ago, turned out the 02 sensors went bad, and it ruined my cats. Changed the O2s and punched the cats, and ran like a new one!
