HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay I am driving home from work and all of a sudden I hear a bang/pop sound while going about 30mph from the rear of the car. After the noise my car feels really loose and I hear a klunk over every bump in the road. I am getting ready to go look under the car now. I hope it isn't going to cost me a ton of money. So far I have had to put appox. $3,000 in repairs into a car I paid $6,000 for in just over a years time. I love this car when it is running right, but lately it has had a problem with staying together. I keep up on repairs and matiance, but everything is falling apart on me. Anybody have any clues on what might be wrong and possible cost I am looking at. I can do the work, but I am limited on my time and work area, so if this is a big job I will have to take it to my shop. They do great work, but I do pay for it.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

It may be as simple as a shock mount/isolator giving way.

Now if you looked up at the rear view mirror and saw parts sliding away, you could be in deep pookie (a technical term.)

I put my money on a broken sway bar.

If so, get an Addco replacement and DIY.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Well we have a winner. I was the shock mount. Man they are not that old. About a year old and 20,000 miles on them. The pass. side came right out the top and pushed the mount straight up. I really couldn't see the problem until I lowered the car and looeked in the trunk.

I have Blisten shocks on it now, but may change back to orginal now. Well I guess it could be worse.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Well just called AutoZone and they said they can't order shocks for the car. Are you telling me that I have to get them through the dealer only. That stinks.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Email Mr. Torrie R. McPhail [torrie@fordpartsnetwork.com]. OEM parts for 70 to 40% off.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

You can get the shocks and mounts from vendors who advertise with us, they will give LOD members a hefty discount.
Dan at fordpartshq.com (800) 266-6049
Max at Five Star Ford (800) 866-1520 (doesn't advertise but gives us a hefty discount none the less)

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Leo,

I tried vendors that advertise with us and that give a discount, but even with the discount the Arnot kit is cheaper by over $100. Why would I pay that much more? I would love to support these vendors, but if I can get a cheaper price I'll take the cheapest price. I will say that Five Star was way lower than the local dealer, $106 per shock compared to $157 and about $10 cheaper per mount as well.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I just did the monroe sensa-trac mod, mentioned here a few weeks ago. Works great!

Bought new mounts from Eddie at Bluecollar/American Air Suspension @ $27 each shipping included, shocks were about $25 each(get them anywhere).

Need to buy T-bird shocks (v8). The top screw mount is a smaller diameter than ours, but will still work. Reuse the stock washer off old shocks, but use the new nut that comes with new shock. You don't need the t-bird rubber mounts(comes with shocks), the MK8 mounts already have them built in. Just attach mounts with old washer(fits thru hole in fender well) and new nut.

Remove old shock mount nuts and drop thru fender well. Remove bottom bolt. The bottom bolt is the same as t-bird. The shocks or mounts(forget which, think mounts) come with new bottom bolts. Helps if you have an impact wrench on the bottom bolt.

My '94 has the shock actuator on top of the shock. If you have this too, just lay to the side, out of the way.

Btw , if you remove the rear seat (bottom just pops up, back has two bolts), the shock is about 3 inches behind seat back. A lot easier to get to.There was a sound deadner cover over my shock top, probaly because of the actuator.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Well after checking prices, I ordered the set from Arnott Industries. Total came to $150 including next day shipping. Kit comes with 2 shocks, 2 mounts and all new mounting hardware.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

"Well after checking prices"

Hey John, apparently you didn't check the prices I gave above. I'm sure the Arnott designed shocks will be fine, but you didn't need to spend that much.$104 is cheaper than $150. Monro Shocks are a good name brand.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to see what Mod you were talking about, but couldn't find it. Besides I talked the people at Monroe and was told that the shocks they have wouldn't work right with the airbags.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the thread, look about halfway down,on to end for BlackIceLSC's install explanation:

http://www.lincolnsclub.org/forum/d...opic_id=1349&mesg_id=1349&listing_type=search

They work great! Suprised me how well they improved the handling in tight curves for such an inexpensive shock. My mounts were wore out bad, so just changing them helped a lot. But the difference in the shock is noticable, firm under load, nice ride when cruising.

Again the only "mod" is to use the shock's included nut. The threaded top is a smaller diameter(for t-bird) than stock lincoln. Ignore the rubber t-bird mounts included with shocks, they are already incorporated in the new lincoln shock mounts. You get new mount nuts and bottom bolt with the new mounts. Ignore the new nut for the shock's threaded top, it is too big for the T-bird shock. Do keep the lincoln washer, The t-bird washer looked too big to fit thru the hole in the fender well. Be sure to put mount onto the shock before installing on car, much easier to do outside car than in. Again, it is easier to get at the interior shock top by removing the rear seat, unless you are very small and can fit in the trunk.
