HIGH idle

I have been having trouble with my car, occasionally, it would idle REALLY high, between 1500, and 2000 rpm. I changed the plugs today, and it was doin it constantly. I was under the hood, screwing around, and i lifted up the intake silencer, and the hose that connects it to the air intake tube broke off, and it was completely disconnected. The idle dropped WAY down. I'm puzzled. I wonder if the problem is somewhere in the intake tube, MAF, or air filter.
Update: I just got a long extension, and tapped the egr valve, and the idle went down!

The EGR or the IACV?

I've had high idle issues before that were fixed by 'tapping' the IACV but never the EGR. I suppose if the EGR stuck open it could cause un-metered air to have an effect on the idle rpm.

ok i had a similar problem with another mark of mine but, if you disconnect the air intake tube while your having a high idle its the mass air thats making the car idle real low, mine chopped away like it was a cammed out dragster when i disconnected it. has your car been shifting the same as it always has?

i think i have several issues going on right now. i have the high idle thing, which calms down when i hit the egr with the extension. i also have the cammed out dragster symptom that you described. yes, the car is also shifting wierd. i unplugged the MAF, and it didn't run any different.

Like Bryan said, that broken hose is causing you to have unmetered air go past the MAF. The EGR is changing things because you're tapping on it but I doubt it is your issue. The IAC valve would be your next bet if you're still having issues after you fix the air leaks.

You can take it off and clean it. You'll be able to see deposits inside and it could be gummed up. They're so cheap though that if you pull it off, you might as well change it. Especially if it's a 93-96.

If i could, I'd just replace it. I am in a bad situation right now as far as money goes, living alone, etc. I don't have as much money as I used to. I remember reading how much of a pain in the ass it is to change. If I were to pull off the throttle body to do it, would I need a new gasket? It is a 95. Would the IAC cause that low rpm roughness?

i would say a good bet is that its your throttle position sensor, mine at the time was idling around 2700 and did not want to shift unless i really got into it or shifted it manually so i would say to check that out its like a $35 part at autozone

Check the large vacuum line from the TB to the vapor canister for a vacuum leak.

I will check that line.
Last night after work, I was poking around under the hood and I found a line that I replaced before, it was a hard plastic line that goes to some sort of vacuum modulator right above the egr. It broke about a year ago, and I put a rubber line it it's place as a temporary fix. It was collapsed, Repaired it. The idle goes way up high when I first start it now, but goes down to about 1k, but still very rough. When I rev the engine, it doesnt seem to go back down as fast as it should.
