Hit from behind

I was rear ended this morning. Less than a mile from my house on a four lane road that was very congested with a speed limit of 60km/h (35mph). I was completely stopped when WHAM! An older Chevy hit a new Totota that then hit me. The guy in the Chevy didn't even hit the brakes. The Toyota driver was a little shaken up as he hit his head on the roof.

The Mark only moved a couple of inches so I wasn't even close to the person in front of me. Not bad for taking all that impact. I just had the front grill painted on Friday so damaging it would not have been pleasant. The rear bumper cover is a mess but there does not appear to be any other damage. Is there anything that I should pay close attention to?

This all happened in front of the local Catholic High School. If only the girls would wear the kilts a little longer there wouldn't be these kinds of accidents!:)

RE: Hit from behind

I would stand behind the car and look down the side of each of the rear quarter panels to see if there is any buldge. Sometimes the impact is dispursed to the rear quarters.

RE: Hit from behind

Yeah, the exact same thing happened to me last November in my 95 T-bird, but mine was bad. That's how I ended up with the Mark.

Like Devicemanager said, check for damage along the quarter panels, especially above the wheel wells. Mine was hit pretty hard (four car pileup), and the damage was obvious. The whole rear end was bent downwards, but most of the structural damage was right above the wheel wells because that's the weakest part.

Hopefully the Toyota behind you absorbed most of the impact and all you'll have is cosmetic damage. You never know though. A decent body shop will be able to check out what you can't see.

RE: Hit from behind

Sorry about the accident. I hope you got all the insurance stuff, and are ready to get your ride back to new again. Oh yea, kilts I would bless them too.

RE: Hit from behind

Thanks for the help. No apparent damage other than the cover.

New bumper cover and paint $1150.00 CDN. My deductable is covered by the other parties. Rental car is available at no cost to me, I can get something equal to the Mark for a day.

I am going to put it on a hoist before I go ahead with the repairs just to check everything out.

RE: Hit from behind

I do not remember exactly how the rear bumper is set up. If there is a foam bumper behind it, make sure that they replace that as well. It is not designed to take more than one hit. Once it has taken a blow, the structural integrity has been greatly reduced.

RE: Hit from behind

Yeah, they gave me something that they considered equal to the Mark when my first one was totaled. I ended up in a new Monte Carlo for 4 weeks. I don't know, but I think the Mark is a little step up from a Monte Carlo. It wasn't even an SS....not that it would have helped by much.

RE: Hit from behind

Problem is, you can't rent cars older than a year old. And they don't make anything comparable to the Mark any more.

RE: Hit from behind

Adam - thanks for the info. It was not included in the estimate and it has taken a hit.

I also agree that there is nothing comparable at the moment. 2 door V-8 that can hold goalie equipment, a set of golf clubs, a case of beer and have all the amenities of a luxury car.

RE: Hit from behind

I have myt car worked on at a ford garage and one time I got a mustang for the weekend and the other time I got one of the new T-birds for a night. Both were fairly comparable, although, I don't thank there was EVER anything 'like' the Mark VIII....
