When was the last time anyone has seen a truly scary movie? I haven't in many years. Well hopefully tonite 28 Days After will be scary. I plan on going tonite. I'll post some feedback when I get back..

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

Yeah, I've been wondering about it. They say it's the scariest movie since "The Exorcist". That's a pretty bold statement. The Exorcist is still king of horror movies in my book.

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

I haven't seen a really scary movie in a long time. Blair Witch IMO was a big disappointment, and I'm always ready for a good scary movie.

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

Doesn't every 'scary' movie claim to be scary as 'The Exorcist'?

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

I rented "The Exorcist" once to show the kids after talking about how scary of a movie it was. They didn't quite see it the same as my wife and I. Admittedly, it didn't seem as scary as I remember either. But, it still makes a good benchmark IMO.

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

I've always been of the opinion that "less is more" when it comes to scary movies. The great thing about The Exorcist is that you never actually see the "monster" (the devil). It's left to your own imagination what it really is. Plus you never knew WHY the devil decided to take Regan.

As a kid I remember staying up one night and watching "The Legend of Hell House" (I think that's what it was). I remember almost nothing about it, EXCEPT this one scene where a woman is lying in bed and something is POUNDING on the door. I mean it was like thunder. We never got to see what was doing the pounding, and I remember it scared the PISS out of me. I had to sleep with my bedroom door open and the hall light on for weeks.

I absolutely loved the first half of "Poltergiest", because you didn't really know what was behind all of the strange things happening in the house. You could almost imagine it really happening somewhere. But then it got downright silly, with the esophagus-thing in the closet and the coffins exploding out of the ground.

Nowadays, it's all about being able to show anything, thanks to CGI. Some guy can create the devil in all his glory on a workstation. But it's nowhere near as scary because you know it's an effect. The mind is much better at conjuring up horror on its own.

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

By the way, a little triva quiz. Does anyone remember where the very first scene in The Exorcist takes place?

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

28 days later was a very good "scarry movie" i would recommend it. It has been a while since i've seen a good scarry movie. Since the Ring this one is pretty up there.

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

It was a good picture, and I'm not easily frightened...so I was not scared. :( But it was a very well done picture.

It anyone likes "creepy" movies, Mr. Frost with Jeff Goldblume is fairly creepy.

Red Dragon had a couple of disturbing scenes in it. The most being when he has getting a BJer from the blind chick while he was watching the videotape of the family he was planning on murdering. Sick.

Did anyone manage to see the re-release of the Exorcist with the deleted scenes? She does this creepy "crab-walk" down the stairs, he body contorted very oddly.

Blair Witch sucked ass.

Anyone else have any "creepy" movies they would recommend?

RE: Hoping for a good scare!!!

Someone already mentioned "The Ring". Definitely not a happy ending on that one, which was a nice change.

I found "The Mothman Prophesies" interesting, because it fit my "less is more" model - you never see the thing. Plus it left more unexplained than explained. What made it creepy to me is the fact that it's supposedly based on "true events". I'd read a lot about it years ago, so I already knew most of the story. The movie didn't exactly fit the stories I'd heard, but it would have been impossible to make a movie of the "real" events because it would have made even less sense than the one they made (which isn't much). For the "real" story of Mothman, check this out:
