How do you disable the door chime?

Be2lose

In title only.
In all my other cars I found the chime by sound and vibration and simply unplugged it. I know it's coming from behind the glove box, but can't locate it.

98 mark

i also want to know this, in my 93 the door chimes goes off when the key is in the ignition and the door is open, but you take the key out and it stops, but it wont stop in my 93, unless i jiggle the ignition cylinder, its a little loose, i hate the chime and want it gone, how do i do this?

Mine used to do the same until I replaced the ignition key cylinder.

thats what i thought, i had a feeling that i would probably have to do the same. i should anyway i dont like how sloppy it is.

Jamie, you might ry this...I found it in the Ford Truck forums...

"First, remove three phillips screws and the lower half of the plastic surrounding the steering column just behind the steering wheel. On the right hand side under the ignition key mechanism you will find a black wire that is sort of plugged into it. When a key is inserted this wire goes to ground and activates the buzzer you are referring to. I simply unplugged mine and put some tape on it, then zip tied it out of the way. If you want a switch, cut the wire in the middle and run each side to a toggle so that when the switch is in the on position the two wires are tied together."

I don't know if it's the same in our Marks, but it's worth a try. At least you can look at one of your junkers to see instead of trying it out on your own car.

thanks bud, i have a column on my work bench i will look at it and see , i do believe i know exactly what wire is spoken of above, there is a black wire that makes contact with the key cylinder when the key is inserted.

When you delete the chime, you will also loose all the chime alerts. Low Fuel, washer fluid low, etc.

Will I lose the alert in dash or just the chime?

I just tried to find it again, I think it's coming from behind the glove box in a case about 5x7x? black platic with a metal cover with drilled out vent holes. I'll try to get a picture when it cools down outside

That "box" is the OBDII SCIL (Steering Column/Ignition/Lighting Control) module. You can't just unplug it; it controls way too many things!

If you want to kill the key-in chime, that's easy. There's 4 multi-connectors going into the SCIL- 2 on the driver's side and 2 on the passenger. One left multi-connector (C288) has a black/pink stripe wire that's the signal from the key tumbler switch. It's closed circuit to power when the key's in, and the switch opens the circuit when the key is removed, so if you simply cut it, you'll stop the key-in-ignition door chime.

...or cut the other end of the same wire in the column near the key tumbler...

It might be easier to just drop the glovebox and go near the C288 connector with a little pair of wire cutters. Keep in mind that the key tumbler side of the cut wire will be live when the key is in.

Glad to help, and thank you too!

I was also going to mention, if this thread continued, how easy it is to kill the seatbelt chime and light on Gen2 Marks and then you went ahead and helped everyone by posting the relevent part of the SCIL wiring diagram.

On the right it shows connector C316 going to the driver's buckle. The diagram shows only one wire, a Brown/Light Blue. In actuality, it's a grey 2-wire connector (Br/LB and Bk/LB) under the console side of the driver's seat.

By simply unplugging C316, you'll trick the SCIL into thinking the seatbelt's always buckled.

i found my "chime box" just to the right side of my steering shaft in my 93. i first unplugged the whole box but that took all my sounds go away not good. so then i took my test light and found the one that got power when i put the key in and took just that wire out of the plug. now when i open my door my lights only stay on for like 10 secs but thats fine for me. i figured if i want the lights to stay on longer i can just turn them on at the dash switch. i forgot witch wire it was or if it will even be the same in your 2nd gen but if you want i can get pics and tell you the wire color.

It took me a bit, but I got to the job today.

Very easy behind the glovebox, but be careful there is a black/brown stripe that could be mistaken for the black/pink stripe. I think with age they have faded some.
