How the heck do I

I have a 1991 Lincoln Continental, plagued with problems. Only 113,000 miles, and just put in an engine, now the tranny is gone. Anyhow, this damned digital dash is driving me nuts! Constanly a Check DCL beeping. Occasionally it likes to tell me theres no oil pressure, and beep about that too. I know the Oil Pressure is fine, and it had a new sender with the engine. Anyone know what specifically causes this problem? Cracked board, wires, anything?? I loved this car when I get it, but now its just a money pit, at least I got my money out of it and then some! hehehe. :)

RE: How the heck do I

From what I've heard, the problem is with the electronics of the dash itself, and that you can't really fix it. How true that is or isn't, I don't know. But like you, we rebuilt the engine (at 120~~~ miles (blown head gasket)), and then the engine and tranny both kind of went at 145~~~ or so. Also, the oil gauge likes to beep once in a while for no good reason. It has been pretty expensive to keep running, but it sure does ride nice! Ours is a 91 too.

So you get the DCL problem as well? Mine also happens to be the Twilight Blue color, and the roof is peeling horribly, and around the trunk the clearcoat is comming off now!! Luckily I only paid $2000 for it a year ago, b/c it needed O2 sensors, and sense then the city was kind enough to hit it while parked and do $3400 worth of damage to it, so they cut me a check, and told me to be on my way!! I got a hood, turn signal and sidemarker assy from the junk yard for under $110, and you'd never know the difference! I guess I should try a dash from the junkyard now.

RE: How the heck do I

I just bought Lincoln Continental 1991 executive and every since, just problems! I know a guy who will fix the instrument cluster inside your dashboard for 100$ in Kalamazoo,Mi,but you have to take it out and ship it to him and I have instruction on how to take it out step by step! I also have his adress and phone no. so email me if you need it! One more thing-your problems won't stop there, after you fix that, cause this car is peace of ####! I just found out that my engine is busted and Ihave a car for less than a month! I paid 2100$ for it,another 100$ for cluster, another 100$ fro alternator, another 150$ for alignmetn weels and now the Engine itself, and mechanic does not want to do it,because he say's he has to replace the front strauts too and it is not worth it! So now Iam preety much down! I can not sale it,maybe parts only on ebay or if someone wants it it is fine with me!

RE: How the heck do I

Can you post the name address and phone number of the guy who rebuilt your Lincoln dashboard cluster for $100?

Would you like to sell your cluster?

RE: How the heck do I

The problem with the cluster is probably bad contacts on the board.

I've fixed clusters in other cars by removing them, disassembling them, and touching each solder point on the board with a hot soldering iron until it heats up and flows. Don't add any solder or move it around, just melt it all again so it makes good contact. That has worked for me before, on an oldsmobile.

RE: How the heck do I

I was driving the wife's old 94 when the oil pressure suddenly hit the bottom and alarms went off all over the place. It turned out to be a bad alternator. New alternator and all is fine with the world.

RE: How the heck do I

Here's a part of a post from the "89 Continental brakes" thread:

"I've avoided saying this on LOD because quite a few people have 1st Gen FWD Continentals and I don't like slagging other people's cars, but I feel I have to.

'88 to '94 Continentals were some kind of horrible practical joke played upon the public by Ford. They were prone to breakdowns, in particular blown transmissions and the now-notorious head gasket problems that usually destroyed the engine, and were constantly full of bizarro electrical gremlins throughout all systems.

They were only Taurus/Sables with cosmetic changes, reminiscent of another absolute Lincoln disaster: the Lincoln Versailles ('77-'80), which was a glorified Granada/Monarch with completely unreliable electrical and engine management systems.

All of us at Lincoln dealerships hate working on them because very few things are ever straightforward to diagnose and everything is so expensive to repair- ABS and Air Suspension in particular. It's not uncommon these days to see customers scrap their Continentals because the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the vehicle."

Take it from a guy who's worked on Lincolns since 1979.

Also, if you care enough to fix your cluster, follow this:
