How to buy a parts car?

I've got a question...I've seen a 96 Continental for sale in my area for $500...based on the description it has some minor front end damage. I'm not interested in buying the car to drive, but just for parts.

How does that work legally? Say I buy it, take my parts, sell some and then junk it? Do I still have to title it before I can junk it or can you sign it differently on the back of the title?

Thanks for the input!

You can just have the title assigned to you and not re-title it. Check with your local DMV, but that's what I have done in the past.

Here's what you do. Buy the car, have that person sign the title. You don't put your name anywhere on the title because you'll have to do more paperwork. All you need from the owner with your name on it is a Bill of Sale. That way, when you go to junk it to whomever, they only have one owner to deal with, instead of two (if your name was on the title too). It is completely legal because you have a bill of sale and if you ended up wanting to transfer it into your name, you'd just have to fill out the title and hit up DMV, but since you don't want to, don't put your name on the title. :)

Thanks guys for your input! I just might go check it out tomorrow....just got to figure some way of towing it home.
