How to make a useless interior useful

Heres pics of the sorry storage compartment or lack thereof design on my truck. Im building a center console/ caddy to hold knick knacks, cell phone charger, GPS, laptop computer stand, clipboard, Fire extingisher, and flashlight and added power ports or cigaratte lighter fixtures. And some secret compartments with hinged lids if i can fit them in. Well see how it goes.
Heres the before picture.

Refine it a little more...

Refine it a little more...

Change your plan a little more to make corrections in measurements, Test fit, and take back apart again. Add some scotch tape for templates of nice wood to be angled cut. Figure out where you want hinges and doors and holes to stuff things in. Make mental notes of shelves to be put inside. Now you have a scrap model. Test fit again. (modify your install plan.) This will have to be installed in two finished pieces. "top and bottom part" Unless you like removing seats for the entertainment value. :)
Make a list of more stuff you need at Lowes to pick up tommorow.
More too come.

Hehe, sorry about the dirty Mark.

Hehe, sorry about the dirty Mark.

But its not getting a bath anytime soon. Still have alot of sanding to do on these two night stands at end of pics im making for somebody.
Here's the newest pics after today of doing more. The GPS and power inverter will fit perfectly. Main reson im making this is to hide the GPS 7" screen behind a little movable door so passerbys wont see it. Also the screen will be protected from the sunlight too.
While i was waiting for the cable guy, i made a nice box for my junk that was sliding around tossed under the back seat. It's removeable as a unit so i can put it in the bed if i need more space inside with the rear seat up. Heres some updates on my progress.

That will help pay for the new blow through tube and my MAF unit from Lonnie at BOC. Just got them sanded, and they will get side trim tommorow and top cover pieces when i wake up and make them. I'm going to do the new Minwax gray tone stain on the truck console to match the interior color. Hopefully it comes out good. http://

almost done, one to go still

before staining and then poly urethane both. For some reason, the shelf looks warped or crooked on top, but its perfectly square like the other one. Picture makes it an eye illusion. lol http://]

final sanding and pre stain conditioner

final sanding and pre stain conditioner

Just to let you know, i hate dark walnut for special projects. Makes them look cheap and mass produced. But thats the color she wanted to match furniture and they are not mine. heres some pics of stained. Ill have to do the poly urethane next to seal them up and make glossy. Im not too happy about the quality of the stain job after all those hours of sanding and climbing ladder of grit papers. The minwax preconditioner i think messed it up. Ill never use that garbage again. Ill stick to stains straight into the porous wood.

This project turned out to be more of a pain in the butt than i expected, and consumed a ton of time when they should of been done already. I dont think i have the patience to do these for money, unless i got offered a ton of money to do a big entertainment center or something i guess. Im too anal about filling knotholes and sanding out imperfections in wood to make it profitable and move a set of items.
I'll stick to building my own special projects for the house. Ok, back to finish up the console for the truck before i got distracted with this by opening up my big mouth. hah
