I am trying to remove the center console in Sharon's car. Thecenter storage compartment screws are removed, but I can't figure out how to remove the front part. I would normally check my service CD but I can't find it.

Carefully remove the black trim panel around the defrost switch, and then remove the 2 screws holding the wooden surround,, remove the surround, remove 4 screws holding the metal tie bracket, and pop off the shifter suround, remove console.

How do I pop off the shifter? I have never done that on these cars?

I am trying to figure out why her CD changer will not turn on. The connector from the controler cabel to the changer is connected. I am assuming power is actually spliced into the controller cable. Am I wrong?

It's an aftermarket CD changer in the trunk that came with the car. Alpine I think. And crap, I don't like waking up to see this.

The shifter on my Gen 1 has a metal c-clip on the passenger side. Look for a slit in the leather and pull out the c-clip with some needle-nose pliers.

Well, he seems to have given up. Went to Best Buy and waited about 1/2 hour for help to find out they don't even sell CD changers. Not sure what I'm going to do, but there are some custom stereo install places around here. I might see what they can do, I hate to make the trip to Carlisle with no CDs to play and the radio barely working.

A tempoary solution for the trip would be a diskman type portable cd player connected to one of those cassette adaptors pushed in the cassette player on the radio.

Are you sure your aftermarket cd changer is an Alpine?

My 98 has a Clarion 6 disk unit, probably installed by the dealer. I could bring it to Carlisle for you to try it out, to see if that's the problem.

Definitely Alpine. Actually, I'm guessing part if not most of the problem would be wiring. It's always been a little sensative if the wire to the controller gets pulled, and then I had big issues when the unit itself loosened up.

OK, went ahead and had it replaced today with a Pioneer 6 disc changer. Works great now, have the old unit, but too tired to look at anything. Bonus: While I was there, a guy stopped by in his fabulous looking 98 LSC (black of course) and we chatted a bit, and he told me the work the guy does who installed my CD changer is great. So I felt much better about the whole thing and also gave him a card and some info on the club. He'd love to get together with other locals.

Minus: Turned on the AC, hot air blowing. Hoping it only needs a recharge and not a new blend door. Will have the kid check the charging system later.

Why can't Carlisle prep go easier any year?

Blend door may be less expensive than a compressor!!! You can also temp tie the blend door to the cool side until after Carlisle.

Congrats on the new stereo and I just had my A/C serviced. The mechanic said it was down a pound and a half on refrigerant. It was blowing warm air, hopefully yours only needs a recharge too.

But the question is: WHERE did the old coolent go??? Did he also find the problem /leak. These are sealed systems and leaking down/loosing freon is NOT normal.

He asked me to bring it back in a month. There is a dye included in the recharge so he'll be able to see any leaks in the system. I guess I didn't question loosing coolant in a 12 year old car....but it makes since that there has to be a leak somewhere.

A very slow leak is (lots of times) in the schrader valve. Try tightening it - the valve stem at the pressure side of the system. And make sure there are caps on hi AND lo sides.

Well, the kid said I have a leak somewhere near the compressor, and air in the system (apparently once the temp is below -10, something about the the system can take in air as the freon (whatever) becomes unstable at that temp).

I'm supposed to use the AC as infrequently as possible or risk having to have my compressor replaced. Figures.

Well, command the master HVAC tech to fix it or you'll confiscate his samurai sword!! :lolgrin003:
