Like I said I feel dumb but here it goes.........How do you get the metal piece out of the rearview mirror. To clarify, I'm talking about the metal piece that connects the mirror to the windshield. I bought the replacement mounts and glue but I can't get the metal piece out. Tried the search function but didn't come up with much. Any help?

One type has an allen screw in it, but of course, the one you have doesnt. Slide a thin narrow knife blade between the two pieces to separate. They just clip back together.

From my CD..but mine is a 1997 - the '93 may be different.

Removal
µ 1. CAUTION:
Inside rear view mirror is of the breakaway design. Excessive force in any direction will cause damage to the inside rear view mirror.

Disconnect the compass module connector and remove the compass module.
µ 2. Remove the inside rear view mirror.

1 Disconnect the inside rear view mirror connector.

2 Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the slot at the base of the inside rear view mirror. Hold the inside rear view mirror and pull the screwdriver rearward until the inside rear view mirror snaps off the inside rear view mirror bracket (17698).

Installation
µ 1. Install the inside rear view mirror.

1 Slide the inside rear view mirror onto the inside rear view mirror bracket. Use the Rear View Mirror Replacer to complete the installation.

2 Connect the inside rear view mirror connector.
µ 2. Connect the compass connector and snap the compass module onto the inside rear view mirror.

it is a royal p.i.t.a no mark VIII's have an allen screw, what i use usually is a small flathead, like one of them precision screw drivers, you have to find the sweet spot then it will come out, they are very tough, so tough once that i cracked the windshield in my blue 93 trying to get it off, i did, but had to replace the windshield too.

I agree it's a pita.

I used two tiny screwdrivers and finally got it off.

I'm still not shure what sweet spot I hit though.:D

Mine was easier though, it already fell off of the glass.

If you are just taking the metal tab off just take an adjustable wrench, set it to the right size and twist. If you pry it off you will likely damage the glass in some way. The adjustable wrench worked like a charm for me.

There are no dumb questions...

There are no dumb questions...

Mine did the same and came off with the tab locked into the mirror. I got a little creative with metal pieces in the garage and shims to force out with the vice. One side of the vice had the mirror touching it, and the other side of the vise had the slide out piece. Rock the little piece back and forth inside the main assembly with some pliers while aplying crank force from vice.
There is a very close tolerance of slide v.s shim insert and you have to find that sweet release spot with plenty of PB Blaster, WD-40 or your favorite spray lube. Keep messing with it with small flat head screwdriver tapping on screwdriver with a little hammer and it will eventually let loose.
It's just stuck from close tolerance, and baking in the sun so many years. Ever grab your steering wheel on a hot sunny day? Well that piece was subjected to much higher temps. Keep messing with it, it'll come loose.

You can also use channel locks opened up to full extension to hold the two opposing pieces also.
