A few days ago we noticed some wasp mounds outside a side door to the house. Over the next few days they grew in number and the wasp are HUGE! Most are as much as 2 inches long and their drone is like a hummingbird flying by. Today I spotted one carrying a Cicada at least twice it's size!
The dogs and cats are very curious so I called an exterminator to get rid of them, the dirt moundss are everywhere. Over the phone he said to save my money as they are totally harmless, they are Cicada Killers, the largest in the Wasp family. All they want to do is hunt Cicadas and be left alone, they are literally gentle giants and don't sting when provoked. Check out this picture I found on the web. They are fascinating to watch and once you know it's safe to approach they're really kind of cool.
