I Smell Gas????

RE: I Smell Gas????

[div class="dcquote"][strong]Quote[/strong] It doesn't smell like gas outside the car, normally, so the smell shouldn't have been there to leak in.

Considering the location of the fuel pump access in relation to the interior of the car, it might be a problem with the gasket that seals the fuel pump assembly with the gas tank.

Will these issues cause a fire?

Will these issues cause a fire?

I am having similar problems wtih smelling gas. I haven't seen any gas on the ground and I have been topping off the gas tank. I am concerned about any type of fire or explosion. Any stories of such incidents?

DO NOT top off the gas tank....when the pump clicks, don't keep putting more in.

How are you smelling the gas? Through your open windows, sunroof, or just in the engine compartment?

No smell inside the engine compartment. Smell inside the passenger copartment with windows up and down. Seems to come when a/c has been running on max, and or, when in stop and go traffic. Then, when standing outside the car just after smelling inside passenger compartment, you can get a wiff every now and then as the wind blows just right.

I've had that issue before, specifically on long road trips. It was hot out both times it happened, and it wasn't a real issue, except I think we were somewhat low on gas, and the expansion in the tank led to the fumes?

Where are the charcoal filters located

Where are the charcoal filters located

I would like to take a look at the charcoal filters I have read about in this post. Does anyone know where they are located? Can I tell if they are flooded or not and if they are, will they dry out or do they need replaced. Also, where do I find the a/c heater seal between the enjine compartment and passenger compartment? Thanks for all the help.

I have the fumes smell too but I found out wat it is...
On my Gen 1:
There is a grey/white hose just behind the altenator that goes from the passenger side fuel rail across to the driver side one. That hose started to rub against the engine cover mount and developed a small hole. When the pressure in the system builds up it starts to leak. I do smell gas in the car and the engine compartment, its not too strong but if you have a gen 1 too, you may want to check that hose.

I am also looking for the best replacement because this hose is surrounded by heat...

I hope this helps.

The charcoal canister is down by the air compressor.

Trixie is probably right too.....EXPECIALLY if you are admitting to topping of the gas tank.

That hose attaching the two fuel rails together is under pressure and you probably won't be able to find a replacement. ALSO....if you know it is leaking gas, I hope you aren't driving the car....thats a disaster waiting to happen. I have a set a fuel rails off of a 97 with 47K miles if you're interested. :)

It's a thick plastic hose with a heat resistant covering/wrap.
I have to replace the WHOLE FUEL RAIL?!?!?!?!?

If you look at the ends, you can see its a very stirdy/hard plastic tube that is pressed on, or installed and heated onto some ribs on the metal fuel rail. I wouldn't trust anything that wasn't factory or that could be pressure tested before I'd put it on my car.

True, I saw that too.
There has to be some type of replacement for that.

I guess my search continues unless someone else has a solution. Till then, I gotta drive NyghtRyder, my Prelude...

Like I said....I have a fuel rail you can buy....$25 bucks plus shipping? A used setup would be cheaper than taking it off and trying to find a replacement.

Prolly no more than 10 bucks. I think I can fit it in one of those priority mail boxes.

You CAN replace the crossover fuel hoses!

Let me dig up some info. Meanwhile - look closely...

This ARTICLE has all the info you need. It is for a MN12 (T-bird) but the same hose and procedure is valid for our FN-10 cars.

Do not use any other hose than the FC332-4 AQP push-on hose made by Areoquip. It is commonly available at industrial hose suppliers.

If your hose is leaking - fix it NOW!

Sweet....Nice JP! I told you it WAS a special hose. I tried to look closely at that picture, but with my 32" LCD monitor I ended up getting a Blue Burn and had to put Aloe all over my face!

JP...did you get the special spark plugs from Nology to run with your Wires? Supposedly they do not have the capasitor's in them because the wires have them. Apparently they said you're supposed to run them for maximum performance from your wires.....I didn't know what they were talking about but maybe you do?

Sorry about the Blue Burn. LOL

I think it's cool the replacement hose is blue. :D

I do not have the Nology wires - those are Performance Distributors "LiveWires". I currently run the Motorcraft 12C plugs.

Driller!

You show off!!! :fart
Is that your ride?
That is a SSSSWWWEEEEEETTTT looking set-up ! ! ! ! :big-grin:

I appreciate all info you can send me, man.
Of course I'm driving the car!! :wink2-green I've been driving my Prelude since I found the leak.

On the side, I'd like a clue on how to remove the fuel rail too.

Of course that's mine. :D

Here is a better not-so-large pic showing the new fuel crossover hoses.

You can do it! It's not easy but it can be done! :)
