idle problem saga continues

Good morning, all:

I told Whiplash that I would let everyone know what happened between the repair shop and me concerning the inept work that was done. Mine was the post where they butchered my harness chasing a problem that they caused.

Last Thursday, I stopped at the repair shop to talk to the sales manager. I told myself to be cool and handle this in a cold calculating manor. When I started talking, all that resolve went out the window. I became upset because of all the problems they caused. I told him that the mechanic who worked on it had so many exposed bare spots in the harness when he decided to attack it with a pocket knife, that it was shorting to the chassis constantly. I told him that they didn't even have sense enough to wrap the harness so that they would ensure they weren't causing a problem.

I came in there with a thick folder with their name on it. I told them that I had a AAA representative present when I unwrapped the electrical tape they had put on in order to show him what they had done. They are AAA certified. I also told him that I had contacted the Attorney General's office and the consumer affairs division of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The sales manager told me, "Hold on Mr. Kitchen. the mechanic who originally worked on your car is almost out of here. Yours is not the first car he's messed up on. Before this gets out of hand, let's see if we can't resolve this". I told him that I wasn't going to stop until he fully refunded my money in addition to the extra expense I incurred repairing the problem. The sales manager stated that they would probably refund my money but not the expenses I incurred. He told me that he would meet with the owner and get back to me.

The owner called me personally last night and wants to arrange a meeting with me.

I spent approximately $250.00 repairing the problem. $55.00 for the code reader is included in that cost. I bought an OEM coil from the Ford parts dealer when I discovered that they had lied about replacing it with an OEM part. I bought two insulators because I didn't know if they had replaced the original one; it didn't look new so I didn't want to take a chance.

I discussed this with my wife and she told me that if they refunded the full amount of the repair bill, not to demand the extra expenses that I occurred. Since all of you were so helpful in repairing my problem, I was wondering what you would do in this situation. Do I push the extra expenses that I occurred or settle for the refund of the original repair bill? I personally would like the full cost of this fiasco refunded.

One bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Take the refund and then take $20 and join LOD. :) If they fixed it right you would still be out the repair money. Because they messed up you don’t get a free repair, whether you took it to another shop or did the work yourself. In the end the car needed a repair that you would have incurred expenses for.

Are you willing to turn over that code reader to the dealer if he refunds your purchase price? I believe your wife has a cooler head than you. Listen to her. I would first listen to what the GM has to say. He MAY offer you some kind of free services instead of a cash refund for your EXTRA expenses and refund your charges for the non-repair. You may make out MUCH better this way....AND stay in good with the dealer. You MAY need their help in the future.

Hi Budd,
As we discussed several times on the phone, all of the Credit for this repair belongs to YOU! Again, I do sincerely thank you for, allowing me to help, not getting fruustrated, spending the time to learn what was wrong, and patiently going the extra steps to insure that your repair would be viable. I am pleased to hear that the mechanic is on his way out of there. No business can withstand slipshod work, no matter what field of endeavor they are involved in.

Sounds like you won't get the $250 without going to small claims court to me... I've been there over a $350 dispute.
Don't know if you've ever been there but, (in FL at least) you go to the clerk of court, they send a subpoena, and then you guys meet at the court house for "mediation" where you try to settle it outside the courtroom with a mediator. In my case I got about 70% of what I wanted in hard cash right there in mediation from the owner, so I was happy.
Of course had I declined and we went all the way, I could have wound up with nothing, just depends on the judge.
Sounds like your biggest loss was (from your original posts I read) was just your time and the hassle .
I would personally take the refund and then still report them to AAA, BBB, DMV, and maybe still the AG. That kind of crap really shouldn’t go unnoticed by the people who give them credit. Also, this is much less time consuming than small claims, as it can almost entirely be done over the phone or online, and that would be a big plus for me.

Good luck whatever you decide.
