Idle Problem Solved

The problem was the Idle Air Control valve (IAC). This valve sits on top of the throttle body and meters air for the idle condition.

Having a bad idle is severe in one of these cars due to the way the transaxle operates. If you are traveling at highway speeds all is well. But when you coast down a hill or even start to decel for braking, the transaxle disconnects itself from the motor. This saves fuel. With no load, the motor switches to the idle state. And with a bad IAC, the fire goes out in the motor.

The IAC valve cost 80.73 from Ford. Buy from Torrie and save 20 bucks.

RE: Idle Problem Solved

My lincoln is a 90, we recently replaced the head gasket. It now idles funny like it is misfiring. We replaced the fuel rail and injectors. It still idles and drives like it is missing on one cylinder. It is not a definite miss though, usually you can hear a bad miss but not in this case. We take the wires off the distributor one by one and the engine dies out like it should. We are stumped and cannot find a solution? IF you know of anything that I should try please help.

RE: Idle Problem Solved

Is the motor a six banger, 3.8L?

I blew the wife's motor up in NM. All inserts were worn down to nothing.

I was expectng the head gasket to go, but the inserts went first.

RE: Idle Problem Solved

No. The inserts I’m talking about are between the crank shaft and the piston rods. Are these things called something else nowadays?

When we bought the car, it had 23K miles on it. "Driven by a little old lady." Well, she might have run it out of oil or ran it for those 23K miles without changing the dinosaur fluid.

The motor blew at about 55K miles (all under warranty.)

Here’s a link to the “story” I wrote about that little adventure, if you are interested.

RE: Idle Problem Solved

The idle problem still plauges me. I have however found a vaccum leak under the stearing wheel colum. I have unplugged two vaccum lines and plugged them with my finger did nothing. When I plug them back in it makes a nasty hiss in the stearing colum itself. I am wondering if this area is problem to my idle.
Any help would be appreciated

RE: Idle Problem Solved

Could it be your brake master cyl leaking? For the life of me I can't think of any vacuum that would be in the steering column.

Can you?

RE: Idle Problem Solved

I have been told of a vacuum hose that is connected to the parking break release. When you shift from park to drive the break will automatically release. I do have vacuum hose that runs from the shift column to the parking break. It sounds like a bad leak and I am running out of options.
Fuel pressure is fine, when I test drive it, it really gets up and goes. There is no hesitation at all.

RE: Idle Problem Solved

Does the parking brake still work, even with the leak?

If you pinch the hose does the leak noise quit? Is idle effected?

There is a vacumn 'switch' at the steering column for the park brake release. From what I have read, it is topside rear of the column towards the firewall. It sounds as if the leak is there but not bad enough for a malfunction. It could be a leak in one of the lines or the vacumn switch assembly itself.

RE: Idle Problem Solved

I pinched the main vacuum line coming in and it did not effect the idle any. SO im guessing that is not the problem. The parking break will not release when I put the car into drive though. And it is very hard to shift from drive back into park. IT makes a air release noise when I shift from drive to park. Something is going on in that area

RE: Idle Problem Solved

I have been test driving it more and more. I noticed yesterday that when I hit the breaks a lound escape of air is heard. It sounds like some kind of leak only when I hit the breaks going fairly fast. Also when I have it warmed up I pull into the drive way or put the car into park it shuts off, and has a hard time restarting? Any hints

RE: Idle Problem Solved

I’ve read though all of your postings on this thread and you haven't mentioned how old your plugs are or plug wires are?

Also, have you checked your MAS sensor for dirt on the element?

RE: Idle Problem Solved

There is no mass air sensor on the plastic from the air filter to the throttle. I guess it is a MAP sensor.
