Injector matching question

On an OBD-1 pcm (1993), if you have an injector that is flowing
less that the other seven, will there be an error code for that
cylinder or does it only know that the bank is lean?
I have a set of Ford Racing #42 injectors to put in with my Vortech
install but have no idea of their history. Some look new, but others
look slightly used. Putting a weak injector in sound like a sure
way to hole a piston. A company called TPIS will blueprint the set
for $200. What do you guys think?

RE: Injector matching question

Buy NEW injectors.

When I installed the custom intake in my '93, I had a set of used injectors 'cleaned' and 'serviced' so I could simply swap the whole assembly with IMRCs, injectors and fuel rails.

Turned out 2 of the 8 did not fire. I had to swap back the old injectors in their place. Needless to say, that didn't leave me confident with the others.

I ordered a new set of stock 24# FRPP injectors. I had no quantifiable evidence, but it ran better, idled smoother and I had my confidence back. ;)

RE: Injector matching question

You didn't see this one coming (neither did I for that matter).
A buddy asked me:
How do you know a new set doesn't have one out of spec enough
to lean out a cylinder when you're at boost?
The point is not new/used, but whether you can see a lean cylinder
and is matching necessary for any set.
(My set is supposed to be new, but they weren't in sealed packages.)

RE: Injector matching question

I asked the same question, is flow matching of injectors necessary?

The answer was it's a matter of proportion. I forget what the typical flow percentages are, but basically x% of 24# injectors is a lot less than x% of 42# or even higher.

For my N/A 24# application, I voted against flow matching. For a boosted ride with 42# injectors, that may be a different scenario.

RE: Injector matching question

My 60's aren't flow matched, and I would vote the same way, no match really neccessary on most applications (tunes).
