Intake porting...

Now, before all the nay-sayers come in and say it's not worth it, I'm wondering if any of you gyus have tried cutting open/porting the 97/98 intakes? Just looking at the one I am picking up Wednesday, ti looks like there is LOTS of room for improvement if someone takes their time and does it right...or at least based on the measurements I took there is a lot of room for improvement.

I guess if noone has, I will have t post my results.

RE: Intake porting...

Hey man....I've talked about this on one of the other boards, and got the same thing that your talking about. "bad casting, and just a poor design." I just picked one up from a buddy, and am going to open it up just to take a look.

I have a feeling that you can get the gen1 intake to flow ALOT easier than the 2nd. But...what could it hurt to take a look eh? I'll let you know how it goes.

RE: Intake porting...

Well, thats the first I've heard about "bad casting". I know if you pull the upper portion off and stick your fingers down in the intake oyu can feel all the casting flash that can be removed around the runners and that could be kind of discouraging. So tomorrow I'm picking up this spare intake and getting the bottom cut off so I can get to work on it this weekend. Hoping, and these are big hopes, to get it done this weekend and welded back together Tuesday in time for the Club Clash next weekend. I think the car should be able to adapt to the increase in airflow unless it's just TOOO much.

Oh well, my car already lost it's sleeper effect with the exhaust, maybe I should just track down a Cobra intake this winter...or finish my plans for my sheetmetal intake. }(

RE: Intake porting...

hmmm.. where are you getting that intake? }(
i'd like to see some pics when its cut open to see what it looks like in there..

RE: Intake porting...

Don't worry Grif...I will take plent of before/during/after pictures. I also hope to post some results, but I don't know what to expect really.

RE: Intake porting...

Just one more post of interest and encouragement. Good luck!

RE: Intake porting...

Well..picked up the intake nad knocked the casting plugs (I think thats what they're called...kinda like freeze plugs in a block?) out of the bottom....wow, what an ugly casting! I'm supprised how far into the plenum space the runners go. Looking at it closer there seems to be plenty of room for improvement, but I don't know how much work I'll be able to do without extrude honing....anyone have names of any shops they might recomend for this if I do descide to sent it out to get it done? I think I can do all the other work myself.

This will deffinately be a learning experience.

RE: Intake porting...

Extrude honing = BIG $$$$$$$

There may be room for improvement, but your going to pay for it. Thats why people have'nt done this before. I pulled mine apart, and immediatly put it back together. I'm not even gonna mess with it.

Thats why I'm doing what I can on my own, but if I can afford the extrude honing (not sure yet, waiting for an e-mail back) I will go that rout as well. My first attempt is just going to be by hand, and I will have a few intakes to work with (found a few others that are willing to get rid of them cheap) and see what I can do from there.

Not like I have anything better to do with my weekends. If nothing else, I'll just end up with a pretty polished Mark VIII intake that flows really well.:B

RE: Intake porting...

I have cut a gen 2 apart. They are worthless POS IMO. The design of the intake is not good. Each runner favors the primary port or the secondary port. Take a look. Get a cobra intake and be done with it. Gen 2 intakes are only worth their weight at the recycler.

RE: Intake porting...

I know, thats one thing we were looking at. If this doesn't work out, I will be moving to a Cobra intake...but I want to take a closer look at this and see what can actually be done to hel it first. The 1st gen intakes arent that great of a design either, but everyone seems to be doing work to them too so I figured I'll take a look at it and see what can actually be done. I personally feel there is plenty of room for improvement, and am willing to take a look at it to see what can be done.

Like I said before...there will be the nay-sayers, and there will be those that will say "Hey, cool, someone is actually doing this"...

RE: Intake porting...

To really do it right, you have to cut it apart, shorten the runners, make the plenum cross section larger, smooth out inside of the 16 tubes, then re-weld it back. Ponyfreak has some excellent pics of what he did for a Gen1. All is possible with a TIG welder. Haven't seen dyno results yet, but a good job has got to be worth 30 HP. If a stock Yamaha 3.0L Taurus SHO with a well designed 24 individual runner manifold can make 220 Crank HP Stock, The very similar 4.6L Gen1 is loosing 50 some crank HP somewhere.

RE: Intake porting...

I am cutting it appart so I can shorten the runners...I thought I mentioned that somewhere, but maybe I didn't.
