intermittent stereo problem

I've got the factory JBL stereo, and in the five days I've had my 97, a couple times I have turned on the stereo and the display didn't work, but the unit did pick up radio signals and the 10-disc CD player worked. When I tried to switch from CD to AM/FM, I could only get AM to work, switch would not change to FM. Has anyone else had this problem? Know how to resolve it? If I turn the stereo off and then back on it doesn't fix the problem, but the problem does seem to fix itself when I shut the car down. When I start it up again, the stereo display works and the AM/FM switch works...

I'm hoping I can use some compressed air on the switches, and if that doesn't clean things out, I went to Radio Shack and bought some contact cleaning spray. To use the contact cleaner, do I need to disconnect the battery first?

RE: intermittent stereo problem

There was a unit on ebay selling for 15bucs a few days ago.. look around of it just in case.

RE: intermittent stereo problem

Last week I used the contact cleaner on the ON/OFF and AM/FM switches, it seemed to help a little at first, but the problem returned.

Two days ago I only had AM radio (with no display of the stations on the radio screen), so last night I saturated the ON/OFF, AM/FM, and CD switch with more contact cleaner. Separately, I've been getting the NO CD message sometimes, and removing/replacing the cartridge sometimes fixes that. But after I used the contact cleaner, I also unplugged the CD changer and let it sit unplugged overnight. This morning, all switches were functioning and the station numbers were visible on the radio screen. I reconnected the CD changer, but I forgot to reload the CD cartridge, so I have to wait until the afternoon to see if leaving it unplugged made any difference in the NO CD message problem.

RE: intermittent stereo problem

Tried the CD changer and so far, since unplugging it overnight and saturating the stereo head unit with contact cleaner, everything has been working for almost a week with no problems.
