It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

Do you think one of the new 6 speed ZF 5.4 liter 2wd F250 transmissions will fit on the marks 4.6 liter? I wonder about the gear ratios and wether or not you can shift it quickly, anyone got any ideas on that?

I'm thinking there may be issues with extra bulk cause of the pto hookups (or provisions for them) in regards to the exhaust pipes.

I would really like to get a fully functioning transmission once again, I have no overdrive now and it shows a little slippage from time to time. I was thinking with the expensive gas prices and how it's almost motorcyle weather here in minnesota maybe I can put the lincoln up on stands for a couple months and do a manual tranny swap.

I'd really like to find a junk mustang with the t-45 and stuff, but I don't really have the room to buy the whole car.

I also thought that a 6 speed would fare well in these cars, but I have my tranny built the way I like it. Oddly enough I had it rebuilt due to the exact same problem you are describing. My extended warranty covered the whole rebuild, minus my upgrades. I doubt the mileage would increase much; I think the OD ratio is the same. I'll have to look that up. The problem with not having enough room could also be rectified fairly easily, through headers and/or modifying the tranny tunnel. FWIW, my rebuild cost about $3400, including new convertor. I believe Dennis sells them for about $2300 with convertor. Good luck.

I have also thought about swapping to a manual transmission. I would probably use one of the units out of the Cobra's though. There's supposed to be a kit available for the t-birds to convert from the auto to Cobra 6 speed. I would imagine it would be very similar to the Mark VIII.

RE: It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

I think the bellhousing would line up. But where would the shifter be, and what kind of clutch does it use?

RE: It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

It would be nothing short of a headache. Swapping over to a manual would entail possibly removing the engine, and stripping out under the dash area as well as the console area, and lots of welding/modifying, ect. THen once you get it to actually work, you have to make it look good.
Then you have issues with room in the floor board. Space is cramped in there. The T56's out of the vipers are stonger than the cobra's. Get one of those and swap bell housings.

Too much work for a street car, and a seriously fast track car needs an auto.

RE: It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

Also remember there would be new programming involved with the EEC chip

RE: It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

I've measured it. Unless you want the shifter coming up from behind your Radio, it won't exactly fit.

I've thought of rigging up some type of mechanical linkage (i.e., Corvette's rear mounted tranny, but front mounted shifter; also VWs and alike), but that was more work anyhow.

Would be nice.

As far as PCM programming, don't need to unless u want the check-engine light from coming on.

RE: It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

theres gotta be a major power gain by dumping the auto 20-30 hp or more as more power is added. plus you get to launch at 3 4 5k. ahhh broken half shaft. so if a manual bolts up and if the shifter is short or someone has short arms who cares. modding the shifter arm anyone? radio whats that move it! the big question is does the drive shaft need to be shortened? so once the trans is in all that is needed is to fab a clutch pedal = cake walk.

RE: It's crazy question time (manual tranny)

you can probably use a clutch pedal and clutch master cylinder out of a supercoupe. That is, if you get a trans with a hydraulic clutch. The driveshaft is no problem, you can go to almost any driveshaft shop and have them make you up a custom one. Dynotech will make you an MMC shaft to any specs you want, for about $40 more than Dennis sells them. Or you can get a steel one made, for about $200. The tricky part, other than the clutch, is the shifter... i bet it's a lot easier (and overall more professional) to fab up a shifter box extension to move the shifter where it should be, rather than moving the radio.

That's something that would be cool to tackle if you had the money and the tools to fab what you need to.
