I've found "The One" !!!!

I'm Canadian, but only recently have I started drinking beer. Not in crazy binge drinking like some here,:) but just to enjoy the different tastes. I've tried most of the available brands, and many tasty micros we have here. We have some great micros here, by the way. To be fair, I try to sample each bear 3 times to take into consideration the variances. Now I have had some great beers. But none that I would characterize as outstanding or nothing that has knocked my socks off...UNTIL TODAY! So let me tell you about it, because it was such a pleasurable taste, I will remember if for a long, long time! This may sound corny, but in all seriousness, when was the last time you had something so tasty, so special, so delicious it jsut overwhelmed all your senses! It happened to me today, doggone it! Here's how it went:

How did it look? The beer was poured into the glass. WOW!! Is this beer ever dark. I mean DARK..like ink almost! The head was impressively coloured, and fairly massive. It reminded me of the creamy thick head from a vanilla ice cream float. The thick head subsided fairly quickly, and left little rings of foamy bubbles around the glass. I held it to the light to see the transparency..or lack thereof. This beer is intimidating! :)

How did it smell? I take my first smell. As the aromas register in my head, I notice I am smiling HUGELY. This beer gives off aromas that most humans find very pleasing, relaxing or even mesmorizing. It's just so pleasant to smell...like when you walk into mom's kitchen after being away forever, and she has your favorite dish on. The smells I immediately recognized were dark chocolate, caramel, coffee, blackstrap molasses, burt and roasted malts and a touch of citrus. If you poured this on your shirt before clubbing, the chicks would be all over you! This could pass as some body oil elixir mixed up by The Body Shop!

The taste: My first thoughts? This can't be beer! It's so delicious..yes DELICIOUS. A beer is delicious. WOWEE! It's so rich and creamy. I can taste so many different, pleasant things. Complex is an understatement. I should be naming off the things I could NOT taste. Mmmm..was that a touch of currants? This is an immense tasting beer. No alcohol sting. It's like velvet! Gently and beautifully coating the mouth. How serene! And once it is fully swallowed, there's no bitter sucker punch from the hops, like most beers. The taste seeps into your taste buds. Seeps is the best way..you don't taste it all at once..it comes and changes quite gradually. It is almost close enough to be taste bud overload. It is a bit strong in the alcohol though. Be careful with these babies!

I could go one and on and on. The beer? A California micro called Anchor Porter. Easily, and by far, the best beer I've ever tasted. The barkeep noticed my pleasure and told me there is even one BETTER!! Also from California, it's called Stone Imperial Stout. In the barkeeps words "If you like Anchor, you'll blow your load when you taste Stone Imperial". WOW. I can't wait! Am going to Michigan tomorrow to look for both of these. Anyone else have a fav beer? I mean something special? Do tell!

Rocket, take a trip to California for the "Micro-Brew" contest in my home town. That Anchor Porter is brewed 5 miles from where I work. I have had it. I asked for a bib, because I was almost drooling with each sip.

The 2 beers that beat it last contest were MBC Dipsey barley, and Dan-Berry;s X-mas ale. neither of which I was a fan of.

My fav's are :Widmer Heffeweisen(mass produced)
Kilt Lifter brewed by a Micro called "Moylans", and
"Dipsey barley Wine" by Marin Brewing Co.(MBC)-also Micro.

My buddy's home-made brew is the Dan-Berry X-mas Ale. It is probably one of the nappyest beers I have ever paletted. He should serve it with a toothpick. But it has beat the competition for 8 years now. It is a cider based beer, very red in color, and I drink it like a Heffeweisen(served with a slice or citrus, preferably orange) and I prefer it slighty cooler than most. If it gets warm AT ALL, I cant drink it. Way too dry.

Your priorities in Beer are common to mine, and countless others here in California's Bay area. If I ever see a "sampler" pack for sale again, I will send it to you. However, most Micro's have a WARNING on the label. "Ity is recommended this beer be stored at refridgerated temperatures until consumed".

Great post Rocket man!

Ahhh. How I long for Germany all over again with this talk. Bitburger -- not the import you can buy here. Now that is one tasty beer. And I remember, each little village over there had its own local beer.
Bitte' Ein Bit.

Ok..I went to the US today, and found an awesome place in Royal Oak, MI. I bought what they had left in the Anchor, and on the recommendation of the beer master there I got some Stiegl and some Spaten. Will let you know how I like those too...

What's the place in Royal Oak called? I might have to stop by sometime.

Here is a good beer site with a lot of information. They have ratings for something like 1700 different kinds of beer.
