Java not working

Since yesterday, Java isn't working for me. I've gone to their site, downloaded, uninstalled all java, redownloaded, restart, etc. When I click on verify at their site, it's not able to confirm my download is correct. Any ideas on what I've screwed up here?

RE: Java not working

Sharon,

I think I finally got it to work after I uninstalled all signs of Java from my computer....after the uninstall, I went into the Windows Registry and using the "FIND" and "FIND NEXT" commands, I deleted any references to "Java". REBOOTED the computer and reinstalled the latest Java install. If you are not positive what you are doing in the registry, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS!!! Find someone who is...and then cross your fingers. I have done this many times to delete references to a good number of pieces of "junk"....spelled C-R-A-P, from the Registry. Symatec (Norton Anti-Virus)is famous for hiding stuff in there so that you can't use anyone else's software.

The "Uninstall" features in Windows is really terrible for NOT uninstalling everything. If you do venture into the registry, don't forget that nothing happens until you reboot the computer and the System Restore may NOT get you back to where you were before.

PLAYING IN THE SYSTEM REGISTRY IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, WHAT YOU DO THERE IS FOREVER!!

RE: Java not working

Thanks Bud. I think I'll wait on going into the registry. Don't want to mess things up more than they are now.

Actually, I've been searching around and this seems to be a common problem people are having, and the fixes that JAVA suggests aren't working for them either. I wrote to JAVA and they are looking into it.

I don't blame you for not wanting to go into the Registry. Good luck with them. I had a nephew that used to work for Sun MicroSystems and he said they hate Windows (and Bill Gates).[/div]

LOL, I don't blame them.

You wouldn't believe how many people have asked me for help with their PC and I have found this to be the case. You have to virtually eradicate Norton to get any other anti-virus software to load and run. I used to like Norton products. Over time they grew into a resource hungry hog that is far too invasive.

RE: Java not working

Oh my. The computer came with Norton. I disabled and removed it immediately, but just did a search and still have files. I'm going to delete them now and see if that does anything.

Otherwise, I'm begging the kid or his friends to look at this for me.

RE: Java not working

Sharon, just deleting the files you can see in the directories won't do it. There is stuff in the Registry that will not delete when you delete the directory files. It isn't really THAT hard. Go to START - RUN . Type in "regedit" (without quotes). At the top hit "Edit". Then "Find". Type in "Symantec". Enter. It will then start running down through the registry. When it finds anything with that name in there, you hit "delete", then back to top and "find next". Or simply hit F3. It'll find the next entry and so on. Before you do this, go into
Help and Support from the START menu. Either back up the registry or install a new Restore point. If things don't work out for you, go back to the restore point you just put in. It'll be by date. It took longer to type this up than it takes to do it!

Good luck.

RE: Java not working

Well, did the registry editor for Symantec and Java, restart, reinstall, restart - still not working. :-(

Their site mentions something about proxy servers, but I just didn't get what I'm supposed to do with them. One of the kid's friends said he'd take a look at this for me later. This is really annoying. But I appreciate the help.

RE: Java not working

We're still working on this....

It seems to be a significant problem and I don't seem to have
Java at all. I followed their instructions of removing it, running a Windows cleanup, and reinstalling offline, but it still isn't working!

Boy, you don't realize how widespread the use of Java is until you don't have it. (oops, I can't get smilies because that requires Java)

I am having trouble with the java on the NOAA website. It won't work when I'm using Internet Explorer. It does work when I use Netscape.Have you tried using another browser?I don't know why there would be a difference.
[/div]

Yeah, Bill. I downloaded Mozilla just to see if that would work, but it didn't, so I uninstalled it. It doesn't work on AOL either, although I hate using that browser.

RE: Java not working

Sharon, do you remember when it DID work last? Have you tried to let windows reset to that date using "System restore"?

Last night I went into the registry and deleted everything to do with Java, rebooted and tried to reinstall from their web site. I could NOT get it running. So then I did a System Restore to a time before I removed the Java entries and lo and behold, it started working again! Worth a try.

RE: Java not working

K. Thanks Bud. I did a system restore to Oct 14, the day before I had any problems.

Now, however, whenever I select say a game which requires Java, or go to "tools, Java" the browser shuts down!

However, one of the java things I couldn't access on my online banking has reappeared.

This is just really weird.

Edit, I'm going to try a smilie. :7 OK, that works.

RE: Java not working

Oct. 14 was the day before I had any problems, so that's the date I tried. Yeah, I suppose I can check out other dates. Maybe I'll give that a shot later or tomorrow. This is just so weird. But I really appreciate your help Bud.

RE: Java not working

Ummmm.... no not yet, but it's better. It just stops me from certain games, but I've found other ones lol.

I was waiting for them to get back to me again, it takes them awhile, plus I was gonna ask Mark to take a quick look at it and see if he can figure out what the prob is. Otherwise I might do the restore again from an earlier point in time and see what happens.

RE: Java not working

So get this -- I just tried one of the apps that wasn't working, and it's working now. Still doesn't work sometimes (java that is), but does work other times. Go figure. I'm not gonna mess with it anymore though.
