Jerry mod. results

While replacing the driver's side motor mount I decided to go ahead and perform the Jerry modifications to my transmission. I had previously upgraded the 1-2 accumulator and springs so I only removed to lower spring. Replaced the 2-3 accumulator with the upgraded part and left out the lower spring. No changes were made to reverse and overdrive servo. The seperator plate was modified to the 350-hp level. New fluid (Valvoline DuraBlend Synthetic Mercon V) and filter. During the test drive I noticed a couple of times a buzzing sound just before shifting which I attributed to air trapped in the valve body. No buzzing since then. Shifts quite firmly from first to second. Second to third is improved but not as firm as 1-2. Twice while getting into it in first, shortly after nailing second the transmission seemed to shift into neutral but returned to second after letting up on the gas. This hasn't happened since. The only remaining concern is when first starting forward at just off idle, while slightly applying the brakes, the car feels as if it's shifting in and out of gear every half second or so. Let off the brake or give it a little gas and it fully engages. I've read where this might be the forward clutch control and worn stator seals. The car is a '96 has 105k on the clock and didn't exhibit any problems since the 1-2 accumulator upgrade at about 75k. I've checked the fluid level and reviewed the installation procedure to no avail. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

RE: Jerry mod. results

Well things are getting worse. Last night I thrashed the transmission by pulling some hole shots and winding out first gear to about 5,800-rpm before manually shifting to second. All seemed to go well, hard, neck-snapping shifts into second without the previously mentioned trouble with slipping into neutral. However, this morning the transmission is slow to shift into second. Even under light acceleration it doesn't seem to want to go into second. Almost feels as if it shifts from first to third. Guess I'll be back under the car this weekend.

Yeah, I have a suggestion. Remove the valve body and completely disassemble/reassemble it. It sounds like a small piece of trash or a metal drilling chip might be hanging a valve intermittently.

Reinstall the valve body according to the torque specs. Try it out.

I pray that you'll find it.

RE: Jerry mod. results

Before I did the 1-2 Mod, I had that common shudder everyone talks about. I thought that I would go through and put a shift kit in there as well. After time constraints, I decided to do the 1-2 Mod for now. Everything seems to be working fine, but I do find that it really wants to shift into a higher gear waaaay to soon from 2nd unless I have my foot on the pedal approaching freeway speed. Never the less, what you have described is disconcerting to me, since I kinda have the same syptoms, though not as bad, enough. I haven't mod'd the 2-3 yet but want to get that done pretty soon. Post anything you find out.

RE: Jerry mod. results

Bad news, pulled the pan and found small metal pieces on the magnet and a piece of a rubber seal. The 1-2 accumulator upper seal (this is the upgraded molded rubber part) was deformed and probably leaking. The metal pieces appear to be part of an accordion shaped, narrow piece of spring steel. I'm pricing my options on a Rienhart tranmission verses having mine rebuit/upgraded. Also looking into a new torque converter. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

RE: Jerry mod. results

Worse news yet. You should count on replacing your radiator too. According to the technical article that Jerry has on the TCCOA, the radiator should be replaced and all of the connecting lines thoroughly flushed before installing the new/rebuilt tranny.

BTW, I'm rebuilding a '98 tranny from a LSC CE with 59K miles on it. If anyone wants it customized for their car's hp, write to me ASAP. I can make it as bulletproof as you can afford. It is out of a '98, so it is wired exclusively for a '98.

RE: Jerry mod. results

You're right, I plan to flush the lines and install a seperate cooler bypassing the radiator completely. Fortunately another member offered me a transmission for a reasonable price. I plan to have mine built for future reuse. Thanks for the reminder on the flushing!
