I'm setting up a system in my friends car, here's the deal. I know a kid that is in a tight for some cash right now. He has a completely new JL 1000/1 amp still in the box and plastic and a 3 month old Kicker L7 15' sub in a custom made box. The sub and box is in mint condition. He will sell it for $550. I've looked on e-bay and the amp goes for like 550 on there. My sences tell me this is a very good deal. What do you guys think?

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

I think thats a killer deal. One of those L7s retails for about that price. Any price you find on ebay is gonna be close to wholsale price anyway.

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

Yea the amp is expensive too. On ebay it's like $560, and other web sites it's around $700. I think the retail price is around $1000. I'm buying it tomorrow. If my friend dosen't want it I'm going to sell the sub and the amp I have and use the JL amp. Hoping everything works out ok.

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

Yea I picked everything up last night. I almost wish I hadn't told my buddy about it. I would love to keep it and redo my system. Mine is alright but nothing special. Damn I should have kept my big mouth shut, o well. I might be able to get more of the JL 1000/1's (new) for a very good price tho, we'll see.

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

way to go, eric. ;) now you can really drown out that "new" exhaust note of yours :D i've got 4 more weeks here till i can come down and you can show me your new setup. don't forget to get some components! ;)

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

its not going in my car, going in a friends. Not spending any money on the stereo right now. I'm spending money on plenty of other things............haha see you soon man

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

ohhh ok. i was thinking your friend and "a kid" were the same person. and he was gonna sell them to you. anyways get some pics of this installation! and let us know how loud it'll go. my brother (the tall skinny one who had the jeep) had an L7 in the trunk of his little 240SX driven by an Alpine MRD-500 (the 500W/2-ohm monoblock) and it rattled the bejesus outta his trunk. :D It's a loud mofo, especially when it's crammed with 1000 watts, let alone 500. :)

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

yeah, those things really wake up with 500+ watts. i had a measly 800 on mine and it blew the seals on the box. im thinking of making a ported box for it and grabbing a home audio amp and using it in the house.

HAHA! good call, Paul. :) I know a kid on the explorer board who installed a XXX 12" in a friend's BMW and now he wants to make a box and use one for his home theater.

Yep there is a local shop here called Inphase Car Audio thats a JBL dealer or whatever, and thats their "baby". They say the 12" REQUIRES like 1000watts or theres probems. They also have a (only one) acrylic enclosure for the 12 for sale. Port is molded into the side and its made out of 2.5" thick lexan walls. Only $950 for the enclosure itself.

Why not power it with a nice JBL GTi amp. Maximum power: 12,000W Peak watts max, 6000 watts RMS @ 4ohm!! This Inphase place has one up there. Comes in a bigass wooden crate, and takes 1/2" anchors/bolts to mount the beast!! If a picture is worth 1000 words, then seeing it in real life is breathtaking!!

I'm thinking of a JBL BP600.1 or 1200.1 - they're usually on eBay for good prices. BTW - I got that W10GTI new in the box from a place that was shutting down for only $150 - list $499! (It wasn't Car Audio Shoppe like on the pictures that shut down - that's just where I snagged the images. JBL doesn't have the correct pictures for the 10" on their website - they show a 12" or 15" instead...)

Yeah that shop has a 12 hooked up to a JBL 1200.1 and all I can say is wow. Thats 1200 RMS watts. As I understand it those JBL sub amps are almost indestructable.

The shop is full of crap. No sub has any minumum requirements to play anything. It is impossible to damage a sub by under powering it. If you give a 2000 watt sub 1000 watts, you will never have any problems. THis is a common misconception of subs and amps.

This amp is freakin huge, it takes up a whole trunk easily. But god almighty is it powerful 6000 watts at any ohm, tested at 10,000 watts peak. But you need a helluva electrical system to power it. It is not for your average street car.

That is not what I have read. According to crutchfield:

"Surprisingly, too little power can also damage your subwoofer — in fact, it's actually more common than damage caused by overpowering.
When the volume is turned up and the amp doesn't have enough power, the signal becomes distorted, or "clipped." This distorted signal can cause parts of the speaker to overheat, warp and melt. Not good! "

Of cource ANYONE with basic knowledge of audio equipment knows how to set gains correctly, and knows how to NOT overdrive a speaker. I have blown a few woofers in my day, so I try to be more conservative now. I can tell you a 15" home speaker does not run well off of 120VAC hehehe. ;) And I was not really serious about him getting that amp. I think the JBL 1200.1 amp would do great for him especially considering the price/wattage ratio.

RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7

What blows speakers is not distortion, but overpowering. If you have a 750 watts amp on a sub that handles 1000, and you turn the gains all the way up and crank it, you are actually sending that sub 1500 watts. The RMS rating of an amp is actually the peak power divided by half. When an amp reaches it's max rms it doesn't just turn to static, it keeps giving more power, it's just that distorion rises with it. We think it's the distorion that blows the sub, but it is in fact that the amp is putting out twice as much power as you think it is. If you put a 400 watt amp on a 1000 watt sub, and crank the gains, the sub will not blow. it'll sound like crap, but it'll play.

Case in point, I once had my L7 powered by the rear channels of my KX800.4. A couple times I had cranked the rear channels gains and volume for kicks, sub still works fine to this day.

THe folks at crutchfield should really have a talk with richard clark. I wonder if they give those generic explainations to they don't confuse newbies with technical jargon.

**Edit, I pose a question, what's the difference between underpowering a sub, and turning the volume down. Either way the sub is getting less wattage, but doens't blow. (unless it's a sony, those things just plain blow period...:))

On the second point, I didn't think your friend was getting the crown, I was just singing it's praises for being a bad a** amp! I wish I could afford one, and had the 4 or 5 alts to run one, and of course a trunk big enough to fit one...:) :)

I have done the same many time with different amps / subs and have never blown one, but I read that and I got a little worried, so I guess as long as you are "smart" with the way you handle things its all good. I'll take your word on it. As far as sony goes- I have a Sony 760 watt (MAX) amp hooked up to my Treo 12 and I have fried that amp 3-4 times already (thanks to the Best Buy extended warrenty ;) ). I plan on getting an amp thats 1 ohm stable so that I can put my DVC coils in paralel and get it thumping good. Its also in a 2.xx Cuft box thats not helping it any either.
