RE: JL 1000/1 and Kicker L7
What blows speakers is not distortion, but overpowering. If you have a 750 watts amp on a sub that handles 1000, and you turn the gains all the way up and crank it, you are actually sending that sub 1500 watts. The RMS rating of an amp is actually the peak power divided by half. When an amp reaches it's max rms it doesn't just turn to static, it keeps giving more power, it's just that distorion rises with it. We think it's the distorion that blows the sub, but it is in fact that the amp is putting out twice as much power as you think it is. If you put a 400 watt amp on a 1000 watt sub, and crank the gains, the sub will not blow. it'll sound like crap, but it'll play.
Case in point, I once had my L7 powered by the rear channels of my KX800.4. A couple times I had cranked the rear channels gains and volume for kicks, sub still works fine to this day.
THe folks at crutchfield should really have a talk with richard clark. I wonder if they give those generic explainations to they don't confuse newbies with technical jargon.
**Edit, I pose a question, what's the difference between underpowering a sub, and turning the volume down. Either way the sub is getting less wattage, but doens't blow. (unless it's a sony, those things just plain blow period...
)
On the second point, I didn't think your friend was getting the crown, I was just singing it's praises for being a bad a** amp! I wish I could afford one, and had the 4 or 5 alts to run one, and of course a trunk big enough to fit one...
