An unemployed man is desperate to support his family of a wife and three kids.

He applies for a janitor's job at a large firm and easily passes an aptitude test.

The human resources manager tells him, "You will be hired at minimum = wage of $5.15 an hour. Let me have your e- mail address so that we can get you in the loop. Our system will automatically e-mail you all the forms and advise you when to start and where to report on your first day."

Taken back, the man protests that he is poor and has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this the manager replies, "You must understand that to a company like ours that means that you virtually do not exist.

Without an e-mail address you can hardly expect to be employed by a high-tech
firm. Good day."

Stunned, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having $10 in his wallet, he walks past a farmers' market and sees a stand selling 25 lb crates of beautiful red tomatoes. He buys a crate, carries it to a busy corner and displays the tomatoes. In less than 2 hours he sells all the tomatoes and makes 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 and arrives home that night with several bags of groceries for his family.

During the night he decides to repeat the tomato business the next day. By the end of the week he is getting up early every day and working into the night. He multiplies his profits quickly.

Early in the second week he acquires a cart to transport several boxes of tomatoes at a time, but before a month is up he sells the cart to buy a broken-down pickup truck.

At the end of a year he owns three old trucks. His two sons have left their neighborhood gangs to help him with the tomato business, his wife's buying the tomatoes, and his daughter is taking night courses at the community college so she can keep books for him.

By the end of the second year he has a dozen very nice used trucks and employs fifteen previously unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. He continues to work hard.

Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of nice trucks and a warehouse that his wife supervises, plus two tomato farms that the boys manage. The tomato company's payroll has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work.

His daughter reports that the business grossed a million dollars.

Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance.
Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then the adviser asks him for his e-mail addressing order to send the final documents electronically.

When the man replies that he doesn't have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance man is stunned, "What, you don't
have e-mail? No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be today if you 'd had all of that five years ago!"

"Ha!" snorts the man. "If I'd had e-mail five years ago I would be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making $5.15 an hour."

Which brings us to the moral:

Since you got this story by e-mail, you're probably closer to being a janitor than a millionaire.

Sadly, I received it also.

RE: JOB at Microsoft

There is more truth in that story than people will realize.

Good to see you back in action Was. What, did you receive a "get out of jail card"? I have missed your emails buddy. Take care.

RE: JOB at Microsoft

If anyone doesn't mind reading the f-word a lot and wants to know just where this buyers market has gotten us in the job market, you can see the results of my interview with Dell here:
http://traeton.deviantart.com

I know it was irresponsible and I deserve what I got and all that, but c'mon, really. I've got car dealerships wanting me to come sell cars for them (that know all about my ticket) and that would involve driving cars and they are OK with the ticket.

(and I would have written a sanitized version that conformed to the culture of this board, but I'm tired of writing about it and I have to go to an interview. To be a customer service rep at a place that leases washers and dryers. Bleh.)

RE: JOB at Microsoft

Wow. For once I don't know what to say, good, bad or indifferent. How unusual for me. Liberal use of the F word I must say.

Trey:

Not to sound like part of our sue-happy society, isn't there such a law that a company cannot NOT hire you because of something like that? It's not a felony...it shouldn't matter.

RE: JOB at Microsoft

Trey,

That's BS. You should have got the job. Sounds like an excuse to hire someone else.
Is the position filled?

RE: JOB at Microsoft

It wasn't an excuse. The guy, I know for a fact, really wanted me in the position. How do I know? I sent him a thank you email for interviewing and said I understood and that if he had any other ideas for a job for me to let me know. He called me back and hooked me up with a friend of his that is in the biz and I got a job through her. Sooooo, no, no excuse, the positions, I think from what I've heard, are kind of churny, and they are always hiring. I just can't sell for Dell with a wreckless driving ticket. Oh well. I'll just file it under everything happens for a reason and move on.

RE: JOB at Microsoft

wow, that makes me scared i have my wreckless driveing ticket court apperence soon, i hope this isnt true everywhere

RE: JOB at Microsoft

Trey "that blows".

I knew there was a reason I dont buy, sell, or promote DELL computers.
well..."this isnt the reason, but it sure adds another one to the list".

DUDE..YOUR NOT GONNA GET A DELL! {and that's a good thing}

sorry to hear about your troubles.
GOOD LUCK in future prospects.

RE: JOB at Microsoft

Hey Trey sorry to hear about your incident..... You are a prime example why big brother is a bad thing! Think about this, you were blackballed for a reckless driving ticket from seven years ago, there are millions of young adults who for whatever reason are getting charged with a felony of some sort, who will never be able to assimilate in to society and get a great job no matter how much training they get! You driving infraction is the lesser of the evils and it still prevented you from getting a job. Don't blame Dell! Blame everyone who refuses to go out and vote. The more we ignore the political scheme of things the worse we will be. You my friend are the poster child for government reform! Might I recommend you go on a quest to get that removed from your record? As a Television News Cameraman I see how the system screws people! For anyone getting charged with a crime. There are three rules you should always live by!

1.Get an Attorney!!! Ben Franklin said that "a man who represents himself in court has a fool for a lawyer". And I think that that's generally true

2.Keep your mouth shut! most people get screwed because they think the arresting officer is trying to help you! He's not.(really)

3. Don't plead guilty or no contest to anything! fight it! even if it is just a jaywalking ticket! A plead of no contest is almost the same as pleading guilty!

RE: JOB at Microsoft

I guess if you say enough supposedly witty things some will catch on. Ben Franklin also said "Fart proudly."
