Keys

Is there a cheaper way of getting spare keys other than going to the dealership? My '97 Mark VIII LSC only came with one key from a used car lot. I was told from the dealership that the key contains a chip and a copy from a hardware store will open the door, but not start the engine. Part and labor is around $150.00 just for a key. Any thoughts?

RE: Keys

A couple of yrs ago PATS keys were no longer available, now they are being made again. I know my local locksmith has them. I'm sure you can find one who does. As long as you have one working key you can program the new one yourself.

RE: Keys

Leo is correct. All you need is a blank PATS key cut to match your existing one. I picked one up from a Lincoln dealer a year ago for about $26. You can program it yourself using directions in the owners manual. Don't let a dealer rip you off for programming!

RE: Keys

I have a remote start, which requires that the PATS key be in a box under the dash so that the remote starter can transmit the key code to the car in order for the remote start to work. I added a button to my kick panel that activates the box that just sends the PATS code from the key under the dash, and i just use a normal hardware store copy. I only have 1 PATS key, and it's under the dash.

RE: Keys

When you get the new keys the programming procedure is on page 130 of your owner's manual.

RE: Keys

I called a locksmith and they have the PATS keys so thanks for that. He said however that you can only program it yourself if you already have two keys. If your making the second key you have to use a programer. He said for me to check my manuel to double check but as I am ordering an owners manuel as we speak I cannot. Does anyone know whether that is true or not. As mentioned the instruction for it are on page 130. Thanks.

RE: Keys

You should only need one key

Spare Key Programming Procedure
Two electronically coded keys were supplied with
your vehicle, use one of these with the procedure
below:
q Using a coded key that you can start your
engine with, turn the ignition from the ON to
the OFF position.
q Within 15 seconds, insert a new key into the
ignition and turn it to ON or START. The
vehicle does not have to be started.
If the key has been coded, the theft indicator will
illuminate for two seconds. The key can then be
used to start the vehicle.
Repeat until all chosen keys have been coded
(max=8).
If the key coding failed, the theft indicator will flash
and the vehicle cannot be started. One of 3 causes
are possible:
q The new key was not inserted within 15
seconds or
q All 8 key codes have been stored or
q The key does not have an electronic code

I believe it depends on version of PATS. See: http://www.fordf150.net/howto/patskey.php

I believe if you have 2 PATS keys correctly programmed, you can program additional keys with any version of PATS.

RE: Keys

With the '97 Mark VIII, if you have one working key and one unprogrammed one, you CAN program the second one yourself - guaranteed! I've done so myself. All these other businesses are just trying to get your easy $$$ for programming.

You can also get a "valet" key, (only operates doors and ignition, but not glovebox and trunk), and program that yourself.

I believe it depends on version of PATS.[/div]According to that article, it applies to '98 Mark VIII's - I guarantee only one key is needed for '97 Mark VIII's.

RE: Keys

I was only pointing out if 2 PATS keys were available, additional keys could be programmed in any version of PATS as far as I know.

I do believe the '97 Mark VIII and the '98 Mark VIII have different versions of PATS.

RE: Keys

My 98 owners manual has the same instructions for programming keys as the 97 and my car only needed 1 key. Make sure the locksmith is aware that the 97-98 Marks take a different PATS keys than any other Ford product. I tried every locksmith and L/M dealer in 2 counties before I found one, and he only had one.

RE: Keys

It MAY depend on the year. It seems that 97 Fords only require one key to program but most 98s and newer require two. I used to have a 98 Continental and I know that two keys were required. If you have a 97, you should be OK.

The '93 does not have the PATS system.
