laundry list and my frustration with this Mark

You know, I just got a new engine, I should be having an easy time now, WTF? now a day later after fixing the coils, I am having a "clatter" noise on the startup that exists when I give it gas too, on the drivers side of engine. WTF? Is something blown now? Between that and the door handles, the blend door, the exhaust. I wish one of you guys lived near me because I don't have the time or money for this stuff. I want to keep it but some days I just want problem free driving.

Anyway is there an engine problem? I know its just me telling you about a noise but maybe you guys know what I am talking about. Thanks

What's the clattering noise I hear when I start my car? It goes away after a few seconds.

This is common on the Mark VIII, and is caused by oil leakdown, causing the secondary cam tensioners to rattle. The 'fix' from Ford costs about $1200, and requires serious disassembly of the front of the motor. While annoying, it typically will not cause damage. Installation of a pre-oiler will stop this, and some have had luck with various oils and anti-drainback filters.

ok, thats good and bad to hear, what oil would be good and whats a pre-oiler? like those additives that STP makes?

edit - oh and it now makes a clunking noise in the front right tire area when I make a left turn, usually a complete turn, not just drifting. add that to the list. I can't wait to get a honda

Timing chain tensioner...but you say you hear it when giving it gas too, as in, driving down the road?

I sure hope you don't run into the same crap I did Mike....what a pain!

Mike - What kind of oil filter do you use? A lot of my engine noise went away when I changed to Motorcraft oil filters. They have an anti drainback feature which prevents the oil from draining from the runners when the eng is shut down. What weight oil do you use? Is it full synthetic?

Your clunking in the front end is indictive of worn out front suspension components, and or a brake caliper problem.

Its probably a generic filter, I could change to motorcraft to help with that

possibly cause it also pulls slightly to the right when I brake

Apparently if you install a "junkyard" engine there is a good chance it will fail within couples of weeks/days because of some kind of oil starvation issues to the oil pump.

I think that is what the problem was with Jesse's mark.

What oil is currently in your mark?

and what crap that?

Bingo. Like I mentioned in your previous thread (hydrolocked)....MAKE SURE they prime the engine sufficiently after install before starting it. If you don't prime it properly...the pump will not supply efficient amount of oil to the engine, causing a timing chain rattle and eventually an engine knock. :(

So....is it always or just on start up?

its on start up but lessens while running but is present and we are way past "him" priming anything as I have been driving it for over 3 weeks now. It may be the coil on that side, I think one is still bad, the noise happened at the same time. I don't know, I threw some of that oil additive in it and it silenced it but it seems to be coming back now, a few days later.

bad coils can make your engine sound like it is about to throw a rod also... make sure all are ok. It takes 5 min to swap it out.

Took my car about a week to a week and a half to start making noises. It was gradual and if I gave it gas, the noise would go away. Not to mention I had an oil pressure gauge to show the pressure.

i know I am going to do so I just never have 5 minutes and a damn 8mm socket

bought a caliper today, and some other stuff, going to go fix some stuff tomorrow to clear off the list.

You sure it was a caliper?? quite a bit can cause clunking / pulling to one side. The pulling could be your tires. Also how are the front air struts? Best thing would be to jack up the front of the car, and move the wheel with your hands, side to side, up and down etc to check the wheel bearings and the tie rods, etc.
Also check the strut rod bushings at the LCA. Also the wheel should spin freely.
As for the sounds in the engine, when you first start it up, most cars have that sound when you start it up. It should go away in like half a second or so. If it keeps doing it you could have lubrication problems, but it could be any number of problems. Best thing to do for that is get an automotive stethiscope (sp?) and see if you can narrow down the noise. They are pretty damn cheap. I picked one up at Harbor freight for like a couple bux, and it's an invaluable tool!

Sweetness =) I love it when you fix the problem you have, then ya drive it and the problem is gone.. makes ya feel, so... warm and gooey inside =p haha nice job

problem with pulling is back but it pulls left still, maybe left caliper?

it doesn't pull much anymore it just clunks on the right side on hard turns, I am going to put another caliper on the left asap and maybe look into the ball joints or something, although when the car is up they seem tight.

the lifter tick is still ever present and no additive works to make it go away so I guess that job is in my future too otherwise I'll just run this into the ground and get a less problematic one in the future. We'll see.
