Left on the Road

I was making my bi-weekly 565mile trip home Saturday. After about 85 miles out, I heard this roaring from the rear. After pulling over, I discovered my right rear Michelin MXV4 with 54k miles had destroyed itself. Evidently, it lost air and ran hot. Luckily, the wheel wasn't harmed. Then, I found out that my temp spare that I have been hauling around since 1997 wouldn't fit. The bolt circle diameter is too large. Not having AAA, I called 911 and got the HP # and they gave me a local tow truck service #. After a couple of hours and $195, I was back on the road with a new tire. I was told it was a cheap line of tire made by Michelin, a winstar or something like that. It costs $80 plus tax and installation. Ahh, the joys of working away from home.

RE: Left on the Road

yep...flats suck. But I have to ask...for someone who travels by car as much as you do(bi-weekly 565 mile trip?), I am stunned that you have never checked the spare.

as for the "cheap" tire...dont worry...the MXV4 isnt much better. Doubtful that it is the V rated version with a high enough load index for your 4000 lb sled anyway.

Glad you survived the nightmare...best check the remaining 3 hoops.

RE: Left on the Road

I bought the car when it was 2 yrs. old from the local Lincoln dealer. I periodically check the air pressure in the spare, but for some reason I never thought to check the bolt circle diameter. The spare tire looked new like it had never been on the ground and the mini-tire was a Michelin. The car may have come from the factory with the wrong wheel. I like the MXV4's. The originals lasted 58k miles. These have lasted 54k miles. The car handles great especially with the new 1 1/4" rear sway bar. It really sticks in the corners. I plan to put another set on the car very soon. My wife and son came back with me this time, so we drove her new SUV. I'll worry about the Mark in two weeks.

RE: Left on the Road

Well, my wife and son stayed with me in AL for three weeks. During that time, Pete and Jamie put a Mark spare tire on the famous auction site and I bought it. They delivered promptly. It was waiting on the front porch when I returned Friday night.
Thanks Jamie and Pete!
I verified that it fit this time and put it in the trunk. It did indeed look like new.

I'm considering buying a new Dodge Magnum RT, so my trusty 95 Mark may be up for sale soon.
