Light Growling Noise From Right Rear?

My wife and I were on a trip yesterday and I noticed a very light growling noise coming from the rear...right side I believe. At first it reminded me of the type of noise you might hear when driving on pavement that isn't real smooth. But then I noticed that the noise comes and goes. When I give the car gas the noise goes away. When I coast I hear it. Seems to be more noticeable at highway speeds and pretty much undetectable in town.

The car is a 1994 Mark VIII and has 114K miles on it. I changed the rear fluid at 100K miles. And checked the level on my last oil change...level ok. The car has never been driven hard.

I plan to monitor the noise for a while but would anyone know what could be the cause of the noise? Is there more than one possibility? Is this a do-it-yourself project or should a mechanic fix? How much money?

Thanks,
Fife

wheel bearing, half-shaft, diff bearings, etc. The ability to fix these things depends on your skills and tools. None of them are beginner DIY jobs, but many on the boards have done it. I have been hearing a similiar noise from my car so I am interested to hear from others.

I just replaced my rear rotors/pads because of a growl I had coming from the right rear.....your noise seems to be a little different tho....go slow and just barely apply brakes. Easy to cross that prob off the list.

I agree.

I've heard these light noises from the rear end on all my Marks at one time or another. I've visually checked things, and never find anything.

I've quit worrying about it unless it gets real loud or something breaks.:D

My noise that sounded like a bad tire was a wheel bearing.

Would the bad wheel bearing be silent under acceleration and noisy during coasting? I hope I have a bad wheel bearing...don't really want to get into the rear end.

Thanks, Fife
