I'm looking at a 95 Black/Black LSC, the interior is mint, the exterior is missing the whole driver side door handle assembly, and also missing the passenger side corner light housing. The engine seems to be in excellent shape at 127k, the tranny fluid needs to be changed. It drove OK, the ABS light was on... I have never had this happen in a Mark VIII, what does it mean? The brakes were fine and the car has all new tires all around. The front air ride worked perfectly bu the car felt harsh in the front end going over bumps, ball joints or inner tie rods? The car is priced very low but i'm concerned mainly about the ABS light and the front suspension being harsh over bumps... any input?

A ABS light turned on means the the ABS system is disabled due to some system malfunction. I haven't had to do a ABS system test but I think it can be done with a ODB-I scanner. A common problem (to ABS in general) is a wheel sensor.

Does the light come on right away or shortly after you start driving. Depending on when the light comes on it may help you find the problem. There is a self test that occurs the first time the car hits 11 mph if I remember correctly. If you listen carefully you can usually hear it.

One other thing, if the ABS isn't working that means your traction assist will not work either, as the traction control uses the ABS system for the traction assist.

another problem that is common with the abs units in these marks is the brain on the abs pump. once the brains has a problem, its done, replace it, but it is more common for the car to have a bad abs sensor. sometimes, all it takes is cleaning the abs sensors, specially the fronts, they get so caked up with metallic dust from the brakes that the magnetic tip cannot get a reading off the exciter rins on the hub. a can of brake clean with clean the sensor and exciter ring very nice and wont harm either one. thats where i would start, shoot brake clean on them and see if the light goes off.
