Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and advice.

Hi all, I was referred to this site by Sandy as I'm in the market for a daily driver and am considering a Mark VIII. I've always found them appealing, but don't know much about them.

I've been looking for a good rundown on specs by year, typical price ranges for various conditions, general maintenance costs, and what the specific quirks and problems might be with these cars.

From what I've read, I think I'm already leaning to the earliest ones. I like the smaller grille better, and it seems these cars have a little less weight and a little more punch? I'm also assuming they'll cost a bit less as well, but likely have more mileage due to age.

Sorry for the broad and vague questions, I'm just trying to find a good starting point.

Thanks!

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

Specs: As far as the different specs by year..this is the best advice I can give you..go to the home page and look at the color by year. These were the most significant changes from 93-96. 93 and 94 vehicles had single din head units and no bumper cut outs for exhaust tips. 95-96 had the bumper cut outs with nicer oval shaped tips...not just the straight down ones. There is virtually NO difference between an LSC and a base model..LSC had ten more horse power from a more legitimate dual exhaust setup, and they had a slightly higher gear ratio. Both of these are absolutely useless because the ten extra horse power is obsolete...you have more of a difference with how well a Mark was maintained, and most people upgrade the gears and exhaust. 93 and 94 models also had a variance in the rear suspension system which was discontinuted on the 95 and 96...search the archives for more detailed info. The 96 was the only year the first gens came stock with HIDS. Some people consdier "93's" the best "runners." However, I believe it has more to do with build tolerances, how well the vehicle has been maintained, and the computer program it came with. If you find a Mark, take out the computer from under the dash and get the code from off it's side...should be a 4 digit combination consisting of letters and numbers. Once you have it, you can search the archives, or ask some of the experts here for advice, because however chipped afterwards, some of the codes are awful to work with. The 96 is nice because the computer can be reflashed. 97 and 98s they changed the bodystyle and interior styling moderately. They both have HIDs standard. However, they are usually considered a bit slower than Gen 1 vehicles..probably because of their poor intake design(Ponyfreak).
However, choosing one over the other really has more to do with one's own personal style and cost constraints.

Pricing: $1500.-$8000. for a 93-96(gen 1) depending on mileage and condition. $6000-$12500 for a 97-98(gen 2) depending on mileage and condition. Remember, there are special CE and Spring editions that will run you more because of their low build numbers and rare color, badging, amenities, and two tone leather. Even something as small as having the original sticker and silver ingots that the CE's originally came with can raise the price.

To be continued....

Hello evlgt85,

I would address you by name, but since there is no profile...x( ;)
I don't mind taking the time to respond to vague questions, but that will lead to it mostly being personal opinions. Have you spent much time here just reading the archives. You can learn an awful lot just by doing that. You will especially learn about some of the problem areas, because people are looking for help. The 97 & 98 models have better lights which is a definite safety factor. As you mentioned they will have lower mileage, generally. Gen 1s are slightly more powerful, but the novice driver wouldn't be able to notice it. The biggest factor in buying one is it's condition, and it's not always easy to tell. Make sure you have someone knowledgable with you when you shop. Price....Don't pay to much. I've got a 96 in excellent condition with 68k miles that you can get for $9500 cash. There are some available at decent prices depending on the part of the counrty you're in.

Hope this helps. I could go on for hours about my favorite car, but I don't want to be telling you things you already know. If you need anything further, please send a private message or post here. ;)

Lee

Welcome! I'm sure that you'll love your car no matter which you buy, a Gen1 or a Gen 2.

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

Iceman, thanks, that's the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

Leecon, rambling is welcome. Trust me. I also know what it's like to babble on and on about my cars as well. It's a common trait of those of us with the gearheading affliction. ;)

Art....uhh....LOL! Am I under suspicion now? And The Wizard of ID!!! Cool! Anyway, I do like hearing opinions. I was at work and trying to sift through some searches, but time was limited. I will certainly try to do some looking, however.

Leo, thanks. Never thought I'd be seriously looking at a Mark VIII. Course, I never thought I'd be seriously looking at getting a third car, either.

Lighting is most definitely an issue for me, so I'm very glad to see it's been brought up. My husband and I are going to be moving to a rather in-the-middle-of-nowhere place in the outlying Phoenix area. Hitting a coyote or lord knows what isn't something I want to experience. I'll look for a thread on what it'd take to convert to HID, but any additional comments would be welcome and appreciated.

I suppose I'll take the hint and get something in my profile. ;)

Sandy can vouch for me (that is, if he actually would want to) sort of. My name is Skye, I run http://foureyedpride.com which is a site for 79-86 Mustangs and Capris. It was recently in MM&FF. I need to devote more time to it, but what with getting married recently and in the midst of buying a house and all sorts of other happy fun stuff, it's a bit neglected.

I have an 85 Mustang GT that I drive every day and have for the past 7 years. The past two, it's actually been rewarded with aluminum heads, a nice intake, tubular front suspension, etc. Due to my crappy driving skills (only about a dozen passes under my belt) it's only gone 12.9, but it's best MPH is 109.5, so it's got far more potential than I've gotten out of it so far. 12 second car with a 14 second driver at the present.

My other car is an 84 Mercury Capri Turbo RS that I had to search the country for a long time to obtain. I paid too much, had to deal with too much crap, but I love it, and it's worth it to finally have one. Anyway, it's a bit of a project for a while. It's a hoot above 3 grand.

How's that for an intro? :)

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

Skye,

Welcome! Generation 1 headlights are absolutely God awful. The plastic lenses usually haze over with a yellow film to compound the problem. Therefore, I would look for a 96 if you want a first Gen that already came with the HID option, and of course, second Gens already have the HIDs(an HID conversion will cost you at least $750. with some dealerships trying to get as high as $1650.). On top of this, many like the interior lighting on Gen 2s better, so I would encourage you to look at both generations; but I would also encourage you even more to DRIVE as many Marks as you can find. Get a feel for the way these cars drive, and you will be able to easily tell between one that has been kept, and one that has been abused.

Well these cars have some universal problems. Now remember, none of them are major, however, they can be costly.

The 1-2 Accumulator Piston: has o-rings that are too small creating metal shavings that eventually migrate into the torque converter. This causes a noticeable shutter when in first. Solution: Update the 1-2 Accumulator piston and flush the tranny...replacing the fluid with Mercon V. The whole procedure should not cost you more than $200.- $250. and will extend the life of your transmission exponentially.

The Air Ride System: Will last for 75k-115k. Odds are after 80k the car will have needed at least one new element of the air ride system.
Front air struts can run you as much as $1000. (However there are many resources here..I believe American Air Suspension and Ford Parts Network sell remanufactured and cheaper on their respective sites). For example, a new air compressor can run you $400. while a remanufactured is just as good for $150. When you go over the prospective Mark, examine it parked on level ground. The distance between the fender well and tires should be the same on all four wheels. Listen in the front and back for a hissing sound. Play around with the message center's system check and see if it displays check air ride system. Take the car to 70mph on the highway and see if the nose "bounces" too much. Listen to the car upon start up, because if the air compressor makes any noise, then it is on its way.
Listen for clunking in the trunk and rear end- a sign your upper shock mounts are shot.

O2 Sensors: Located near the Cats..these tend to burn out after awhile and can create an obnoxious rotten egg smell in the cabin. These cost around $50. a piece(don't quote me on this one).

Door Handles: are cheap pot metal. I'm currently going onto my fourth..=) About $150. fix at a dealership, but far more of an inconvenience than that.

Door Latches and Hood Latches: Cause the message center to read "door ajar" and the hood to not shut tight- or to take a tremendous amount of force to shut. Easy fix- liberate the areas with WD-40.

Warped Brake Rotors: Personally, I've never had a problem with the stock rotors, but then again, I don't drive like a !@#$!%#! :)

I believe those are the most 'common' problems. Other than that, the maintanance is no worse than any other car. In fact, it can definately get much worse. Take for instance
Mark VIII transmissions. If you go to any tranny shop they will probably quote you anywhere from $1200-$1400 for a rebuilt installed. My ex's POS Jetta, because of the POS's electronically 'special' tranny, they wanted $3750. Ouch! =0

Skye, it sounds like the best bet for you would be to look for a 96 with HIDS already in there. You seem confident that you will need the enhanced(and in my opinion absolutely essential) lighting, and you like the styling better. So what are you waiting for? Go look! Oh lol I'm the only genious up at 3:15am..oh well...good luck..happy hunting...we'll be here when you need us... :D

Iceman,

The above post is great. Should be required reading for anyone in the market to buy. The next time someone ask's that kind of question we now definately have something in the archives to refer them to. You just did all of us and the club a sigificant good deed.

Skye,

I had a feeling you were sand-bagging. :p ;-) You probably know as much about cars as a lot of us here. :) On a serious note, if there is any information you need, all you have to do is ask. I check in here at least two or three times a day, although it's at 2-4AM a lot of the time. There are others who are here more often. If you happen to hear of a Mark in your search in this area, I would be happy to check it out for you. Welcome

Lee

Lee, awww shucks. Patting self on back..lol. I would have liked my verbose ramblings to have been a single post except I was leaving work at 11pm the other night. :) Gee and all this time I thought I was just a windbag..lol nice to know I know something.. ;)

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

Well, I think you're on to something. 96 will be the target. An earlier Gen 1 will still be a possibility if I get a screamin' deal or something, but I'm learning my leanings.

IceMan, never let it be said that your ramblings are pointless! That was a fantastic post.

One issue is, work will be done by us, and not a dealership. There isn't a single one we trust out here, and, well, we never take our cars or truck to be worked on anywhere. Except for exhaust work...we don't have a welder...yet. I've seen repair manuals on CD, which are okay, but that's kind of hard to have in the garage next to the car when you're doing something important. I'm assuming the regular print factory repair manuals must be available somewhere?

Lee, nah, not sandbagging. I may know cars, and I may know MY cars, but I know that all models have their own specific quirks and such, so I need to learn the specifics (and costs) of the ones I'm interested in for purchase. Mark VIIIs being the only one in serious contention at the moment.

Oh, has anyone de-activated the driver's side air bag? Not kidding. I am 5'2" and basically sit on top of the steering wheel. I really, really don't like air bag cars due to that, and since this will be my driver, I'm definitely going to want to disable it (but keep it in case of the car's sale later). At my size and height, at best I'd wind up paralyzed, I'm sure.

Sorry if I'm making little sense, I just got up, and am realizing I need to get to work! AHHHH!

Sandy was right, this place rocks.

:)

Hi Skye! Glad you came here, you'll get lots of good info.

In regard to being short, I find with the combinations of the seat positioning and the tilt-telescope wheel, I don't have to sit right on top of the steering wheel, and I'm not even as tall as you. ;-)

Hey, Skye, I heard a rumor of an M81 that may be going on the market. I'll try & follow it up for you and if I get anything solid on it, I'll e-mail you or PM you at 4-Eyed Pride.

I too would suggest a 1996 Mark 8. Unless you wanna drop $17,000 or so for an ultra lo miles '98. From time to time these are up 4-sale with like 20,000 on them, but they are priced at what they are worth and it's unsually near twenty thou. (You'll need THAT for the M81 :) ) Smiles to Mike! :) :)

RE: Looking for a lot of general info, opinions and adv

Good Morning Skye,
Greetings from another Arizona resident.
A few pointers that others have not touched on, finding a first gen vehicle in Arizona without a lacy rear window seal will be difficult. The only thing that should be pointed out about this feature is that the outside trim around the window is bonded to the window and is for all intents cosmetic, as the rear glass is glued in. The only reason that I mention this is that I had my rear glass replaced and the cost of the window was $2300.00, Then I had to find someone to install it properly. No I did not pay for the window, but that is another whole story, that I will tell you if your interested.
I felt that the overall condition of the car warranted that simple change.
Other things that you might be consious of in Arizona, diffinately get the 1-2 shift spring replaced, (Five Star Ford in Scottsdale, ask for Max, and make sure your membership dues are paid up, he checks before giving you the 25 - 40% club discount).
I just replaced all of my "stock" lights with new stock lights from Five Star and the total cost to me was under $600.00. Yes a little steep, but if you then put Sylvania Silver Bulbs, they put out a very respectible amount of light. I found that the old ones were still servicible after sanding and re-finishing the plastic, but alas the Arizona heat had done it's bit with all the plastic housings and the mounting plastic studs were all beginning to give and break. At any rate, I also recommend that you place small, inconspicuous driving lights under the front bumper, (there are more than one hole under there that a nice pair of lights will fit) because at speed the stock lights are not sufficient. This last statement includes HIDs. Yes I know this will start a lot of static, but the reality is that here in Arizona, with all the wide open spaces, it is always tempting to push the ride up to near the 90mph zone, and if at that speed a coyote decides to introduce itself, you need allllll the light you can get.
On a last note, don't be afraid to toodle on down the freeway, 1.5 hrs to Tucson, you might find the Marks there just a little bit less torn up.
The only other Arizona unique thing is, make sure to change the oil to Synthetic, both in the engine and transmission. We have Lincoln 4.6es here in the south that are wearing out at about 300 thousand miles.
Good luck and keep in touch.
