Lost car keys

During my lengthy (and continuing) illness, my lovely wife managed to lose both my full function and valet keys. Now my car is sitting in the driveway with the doors locked, and a dead battery. I have no way to enter the car. What are my options. I assume I have to buy a blank, have the car towed to the dealership and let them get the key code and cut a key. Then they should be able to open the car and program the car/key. Am I right?

RE: Lost car keys

Art, welcome back! :) So good to hear & see from you!
Can't help with the keys, but just had to send my best. You are always on our collective minds. Continued improvement my friend!

RE: Lost car keys

Welcome back Art!

Depending on how far the dealership is from your house, and having to pay for a tow that far.... you might be better off buying a blank, breaking the window, and having a locksmith come take care of it from there.

RE: Lost car keys

I would call a locksmith who deals with cars specifically Art.

Leave it to him to get into the car. That should be cheaper then anything else. I also wonder, if the dealer can come up with a key based on the VIN..........

One question, if you ahve to break something to get in, does your Insurance cover it? New back window? :)

RE: Lost car keys

Welcome back Buddy!

I'm not surprised, at least you did the manly thing...Blame the Wife!

RE: Lost car keys

Hey Art, glad to see you on here again. I don't know about the key situation, but I hope you're doing well. :)

RE: Lost car keys

Breaking in will do you no good on a Gen 2 - even if you have the key cut correctly, unless you first have at least one programmed key, you can't reprogram any more because of the way the PATS system works. Without at least one key, Art's only option it to take it to a dealer, where it has to be reprogrammed with an NGS or WDS system. Personally, I'd think searching the house a little more would be the best option.

RE: Lost car keys

Hi Art! Glad to see you back again! I asked the mechanic that works on my Mark, and he said that the dealership SHOULD have written the key code in the owners manual. Of course, that doesn't help when you can't get into the car.}> Anyway, it's great to have you back!

Im with John on this one.

RE: Lost car keys

Loosing both keys on gen 2 = deep dodo

Hopefully the local dealer has some super sharp techs with extensive PATS knowledge.

Its VERY HARD to find these keys, much less have anyone who knows anything about them.... I say look reallll well for those keys!

RE: Lost car keys

you can get into the car wit ha big easy within 5 minutes. I jsut had to do it on the green car a couple weeks ago.

Once you are in you have to go from there about getting a key.

RE: Lost car keys

I once recieved instructions on how to disable the Pats system, so a normal key would be able to start the car, but I cannot seem to find it.

RE: Lost car keys

Update: my wife (no.1) found the full function key and remote in the console of wife's (no.2) Windstar. Car sat for about 3 months so the battery may be shot. Dealership said they could have taken care of the problem but it would have cost an arm and a leg.
BTW, Max at Five Star Ford has a few keys in stock available to club members at the normal discount.

That's the problem with having more than one wife, too confusing.;)

The battery may just need a good night on a battery charger.

Great to see you back, Art.
