low coolant

I get a low coolant message but system seems full, i have checked for air ( i Think )and the temp gauge seems at or below the normal spot

Any ideas?? How would you detect a water pump malfuntion

90% of the time if the pump is bad it will leak out of a weap hole on the bottom of the pump.
