Could I do this job myself or should I get a friend to help me out?
And do I need any special tools? I have the standard sockets and wenchs, and pneumatic air tools, any advise for the install

Rick

RE: LQQK what found at my door

You can do it yourself, but I would suggest two items, a lift and air tools. The book estimates somewhere between 5 and 8 hours.

RE: LQQK what found at my door

You probably want the help of a friend. To R&R the rear itself is not that bad, especially with air tools. If you do a search on the board, you should find a few pointers and tips when I installed my 4.10s.

As far as needs, you do need at least one axle nut. Replacing the bushings is a great idea also.

I thought the Cobra 3.73s shipped with oil and friction modifier? If not, fill the unit prior to bolting it in and use the whole bottle of friction modifier(4 oz?). The fill level should be just slightly below the fill plug.

I did it with a friend helper. Its much easier with 2 people and a lift. There are step by step instructions floating around in some old posts.

hi 'i been looking around reading forms will i need 2 new circlips, axle retaining nuts?Rick

The axle retaining nuts are one time use only. You only need to pull one axle, so only one replacement nut is required.

To pull the hub, look [a href=//markviii.org/~1wykdmk8/rearhub.html]here[/a]. The following are exerpts from the manual to guide your way.

Remove the antilock brake sensors and then pry the halfshaft from the housing and remove the halfshaft assembly from vehicle. Insert Differential Plug into differential housing to prevent lubricant loss.

Mark driveshaft in relation to circular companion flange(should you ever need to replace the original unit). Remove driveshaft retaining bolts. Slide driveshaft forward and rest on driveshaft hoop.

With a transmission jack supporting the rear axle, remove rear axle mount retaining bolts. Remove rear mount and damper assembly from axle cover.

Remove axle front retaining bolts, nuts, bushings and washers.

Remove the other halfshaft (at the inboard CV joint) from carrier assembly by moving carrier assembly to the side and down. Install Differential Plug in open side of housing and lower carrier assembly from vehicle.

Position new carrier assembly on transmission jack and partially raise to align CV joint stub shaft into differential side gear. Lightly lubricate stub shaft splines prior to installation.

Locate carrier assembly on front retaining bolts. Install bushing, washers and nuts on front differential mount. Tighten to 92-136 N-m (68-100 lb-ft).

Install rear mount and damper assembly to differential cover. Tighten to 108-136 N-m (80-100 lb-ft). Install rear mount-to-crossmember retaining bolts and nuts. Tighten to 165-211 N-m (122-156 lb-ft).

Align driveshaft and circular companion flange. Install retaining bolts. Tighten to 95-129 N-m (70-95 lb-ft).

Lightly lubricate stub shaft splines of remaining halfshaft and carefully align the splines of the inboard CV joint stub shaft with splines in differential. Push halfshaft into differential.

Reassemble hub that was removed. Install wheel and tire assembly. Tighten wheel lug nuts to 115-142 N-m (85-105 lb-ft). Lower vehicle. Tighten hub nut to 340 N-m (251 lb-ft). Install wheelcover/hub cover.

I did not use the circlips upon reassembly on my '93 when I installed 4.10s.

RE: LQQK what found at my door

you do not need another axle nut. The rearend that you have is already put togeather and has a new one on it.

Joe, axle nut, not pinion nut. I know some say you do not need to replace the axle nut, but the manual proclaims to use a new one.

'DOH. My signature natually makes me dumber by association. Forgive me, I must find another sig pic.

RE: LQQK what found at my door

Not that I'm aware of. But you remind me, you do need a new speedo gear at the tranny speed sensor. I think that's what the chip reads anyways.

RE: LQQK what found at my door

theres a very important break in procedure for new gears. doing a search on this site or another one may yield the info you need.

RE: LQQK what found at my door

Just send it to me, I'll pay the shipping. I'll also put it in my Mark and I'll test it and tell you how long it takes and the easy proceedure for replacing the rear without any other parts. No circlips, and no axle nuts.
PLEEEEEEEEEEEESE!!!!!!!!!!!!
(See? I'll do everything.)

RE: LQQK what found at my door

Hi,

I just got my rear end in, I haven’t driven the car real hard yet, but I see the car shifts differently now. I may need a new chip so she knows what gears are in it, there is a break in procedure for the gears so you don't damage them. You won't notice a huge difference under normal driving, but when you get on it little it will feel different. Oh ya I broke my bolt on my rear end, the one that goes thru the bushings, I found one used at the bone yard. I see not much diff. From 3.08 to the 3.73 the rpms are little higher I would say 300 to 500 more, have to love the trac lock! I did this job my self in about 5 to 6 hours I pull the right side off so I did not need to remove the exhaust , need the thank every one that help me all the info, I got from LOD, thanks!
Rick!

need info on chips what kind, where to buy from,
