LS valve cover gaskets

A friend of my dads has a 2000 LS, V8, with 90k on it, that she just bought used. She's having a couple of problems with it that i'm going to fix for her (for a small fee :)).

She has a check engine light, and the fine folks at autozone say it's a misfire on #8, so i'm going to do her plugs. That's not a problem. I just mentioned that because it MIGHT be related to the next problem.

The primary concern is some oil smoke coming from the rear drivers side of the engine. It appears that the valve cover gasket is leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold. Is this a common problem? How hard is it to fix? I'm sure i can do it, i just have to figure out how hard it is before i tackle it, so that i can charge a fair price. Will the valve cover come right off, or is it going to be a PITA? I ask simply because i'm not sure if there's enough clearance to the strut tower, or to the brake master cylinder.

RE: LS valve cover gaskets

I'm pretty sure it's coil on plug. And #8 is that plug right by where it's smoking.

RE: LS valve cover gaskets

IS it the v8, i think they have the coil on plug. If it is could it be the head gasket? I see a drop of oil on my front plug boot when I change the plugs. But is so little it does not cause any problems. Pop out the coil and take a look first and see if there is a lot of oil in the plug well.

Also if she just got it and they hosed off the engine, that can cause a misfire back there if water got in.
