MAF cleaning

Can someone tell me how to clean the MAF sensor? I'm trying to diagnose a hesitation/stumble/miss situation.

Thanks in advance.

RE: MAF cleaning

...hesitation/stumble/miss... the absolute worst thing to try and diagnose. The best I can advise is to look back what may have preceded it. Did you or anyone do any work on the car lately? Perhaps removed the intake tube(leak @ throttle body)? Move the spark plug wires(broken internal wire)? Wash the engine(wet plug/coil)? Also check all the vacuum lines.

RE: MAF cleaning

Yesterday, I replaced the fuel filter (totally plugged), new spark plugs and wires, and speedo gear (BTW, thanks for the math on the gear size, you were right on...)

Other than that, nothing...!

Retrace your steps. Carefully check the intake tube/throttle body connection. The rubber seal can easily be out of place. The same goes for the rubber connector at the airbox/maf. Double check the plug wire installation to make sure they are all seated correctly both at the coils and the plug stalks. Check the vacuum lines at the solenoids on the drivers side valve cover.

RE: MAF cleaning

Good advice. I'll have to take a look at those areas this weekend...
I'll let ya know what I find. Thanks!

RE: MAF cleaning

After you do your MAF cleaning(or anything else that could affect your tune) , be sure to disconnect the battery for a couple minutes. It takes quite a few start cycles for the computer to learn that something is fixed unless you do.

RE: MAF cleaning

Hmm... Well, if that's the case maybe the computer will retune over the next few start-ups anyway. Maybe I really don't have a problem and everything that I did yesterday changed things enough to send it for a loop! I'll drive it for the next couple of days and see if it gets any better.

RE: MAF cleaning

I just took the car out again. It's getting worse. I put it on the scanner and got the following. (I have not cleared any codes recently, and I have had the trans rebuilt, so some of these may not be relavent any more.)

113- Intake air temp sensor above maximum voltage

172- Lack of heated oxygen sensor switches indicate lean bank 1

173- Lack of heated oxygen sensor switches indicate rich bank 1

176- Lack of heated oxygen sensor switches indicate lean bank 2

177- Lack of heated oxygen sensor switches indicate rich bank 2

524- Low speed fuel pump circuit open battery to control module

543- Fuel pump secondary circuit failure battery to control module

628- Excessive converter clutch slippage

I am going to clear these codes now and see what comes up next. Any ideas?

RE: MAF cleaning

Man, that's a load of codes!! Did you disconnect the battery? I read somewhere that the Ford computer "averages" engine parameters from the last 80 start cycles. When you cycle the battery, it starts learning immediately. Might take a month or two for it to completely learn that all is well unless you cycle the battery connection.
