Maintaining the Air Ride

I picked up a '94 Mark about 3 weeks ago after totaling my '96 I owned and worked on for 12+ years, oh well.
The new car has 88k miles, about 15k in the last ten years, lots of sitting recently with start ups 2-3x/month. Orig. front end suspension including air ride. No significant repairs to suspension...yet.
Initially when I got it, and it was a little warmer (I'm in Raleigh, NC) I noticed the front end slammed in the morning- rarely, usually it was normal parked height. Since the temp's dropped a bit it's slammed most mornings. Unlike my last two Marks I want to retain an air ride as long as I can.
I found a guy locally selling his '98 Mark with 57k miles. He converted to coils at 45k when the compressor died. He claims the front air struts don't leak. Does that make sense? When I go look at them, how can I do a thorough visual inspection to try and be sure I'm not spending good money on more leaky bags?
(trying to upload pics...unable)
