Message Center: Check Traction Control

Hi all,

Just last night and once this morning, I got a "Check Traction Control" in the message center. It has shown up under nearly identical conditions both time: normal braking for a traffic light on dry pavement going perhaps 3 or 4 mph - just about to stop. The traction control still appears to function when it has shown up. I don't like the idea of a verb showing up in my message center.

Help? Things to check? Other experiences? Ways to diagnose?

Thank in advance to all that reply.

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

Are you getting an ABS message with it? My wheel sensor went bad and gave an ABS message then a Check Traction control message, then it turned the Traction control off.

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

Marcia,

No, no other messages besides the "Check Traction Control." I have tried basically nothing since this has happened. I am able to push the "Reset" button and clear it. If I run a system check, it cycles through all of the goodies and returns the CTC message back on the display.

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

Hmmm...

Is it possible that there's some debris on one of the ABS sensors? Does a "no reading" shut off the system on a Lincoln? It did just that on another brand I own.

I know the hub replacement instructions call for cleaning the sensors.

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

First step is an inspection of the wheel sensors. Clean up the sensors and the rings, and check to make sure the sensor is close to the ring but not interfering with it, and check to make sure all the connections are tight. See if that fixes it and go from there.

It could also be a bad ground or a bad conncection somewhere. I know if i have my car running, and turn the key to the start position (if it's in gear it won't grind the starter, i do this occasionally to reset everything if i don't shut the car off when fueling) i get a check traction control message, yet it still works with a vengeance.

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

You know... I was just driving around running some errands and wondering if the sensors could be being "blocked" by debris or leaves, moss, etc that may have blown up from the road. I plan the 3.73 pumpkin swap this weekend. I'll definitely inspect the rear sensors and see if maybe they're dusty or something. Are they optical or electrical? They've got those star wheel looking things I know. I'd guess electrical. In between now and then I'll pull each front wheel and inspect all around them too. BTW, no message on the errand trip. Maybe the ghosts and goblins went away?

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

The problem with mine ended up being a plastic grocery bag that had wrapped itself around it and broke the wire for my sensor.

RE: Message Center: Check Traction Control

I have gotten that message twice or so, I just restart the engine, and it never comes back (knock on wood).
