Mike's CAI Mod

I have been having trouble with my air filter, as the last two filters have torn the filter's foam gasket. I have the air silencer removed. I believe this foam gasket tear is caused by high vacuum pressure on the MAF side, and hardly any pressure on the deleted silencer side, creating stress on the filter resulting in the tear of the foam.

I did not want a conical filter, K&N panel, or reinstall the silencer. So, I decided to speed the airflow up somehow. In the pictures below, the entire Cold Air Induction trumpet attached to the lower section of the airbox was made with parts taken from the silencer.

I have also switched from STP to a NAPA Gold (made by WIX) filter. What I have noticed so far is the silencer delete growl is almost gone. Hopefully, some cold air, and increased air speed will help improve economy, and my 1/4 mile time :)

RE: Mike's CAI Mod

Nice work.

Do you think the pressure difference is causing the tearing? I'm sure some guys use those same air filters in LS1 engines with a lot more horsepower - ergo airflow.

I'm asking because I've also deleted the silencer as well as the resonator stuff on the intake tube and have not experienced the same issues you have.

RE: Mike's CAI Mod

Thanks, Guys. IMHO, my thought was to speed the air flow up using the trumpet to help equalize pressure on both sides of the filter to reduce the amount of pulling/flexing action of the filter, and hopefully stop the tearing.

I believe it is a similar result as having more engine torque with back-pressure from the use of exhaust mufflers vs. unrestricted straight pipes.

It could be that the last two STP filters were defective, but I will not put another one on the Mark to see if it fixed the problem.

I took the Mark out for a spirited ride today, and can tell you the butt-o-meter says the mod makes the Mark pull hard, and run smooth :) .
